Big thanks to Prospector for sending me a free brass inclinometer from his basement:
I gave it a good rubbing with Brasso:
Then I went to Hobby Lobby and got a simple pine plate, stained it dark mahagony and gave it 4 coats of clear varnish. Mounted up the inclinometer and a couple of decorative pieces:
I'll take it out to the boat this weekend! Thanks again C!
Scott
When we left, we had just enough fuel to make it to San Juan. And now... we are out of fuel!
Nice job Scott. Island Time came with one, but the PO call and asked for it back, if I remember right, it was a gift from his wife or child. I returned it, but always look for one when we hit a nautical flea market or swap shop. So...thanks to hewebb for posting the link.
Nice job Joe on cleaning this up. I found someone selling a bunch of these on eBay. Maybe larger than the one Joe used but they look to be in great condition. I expect mine to arrive tomorrow.
Those are definitely bigger at 10x12.....mine measures 8x6.
I got my back piece from Hobby Lobby....just an inexpensive pine oval. I stained it with Minwax, added a couple of decorative thingies and 4 coats of Helmsman.
If you do pick one of these up, they are little more than a decorative piece - please do not think they carry a degree of real accuracy. For that you need the bubble-level style of inclinometer or markings on your compass.
If you have one, calibrate it with a little Brasso. Once it's nice and shiny, you can use it as a valuable and accurate device to measure your heel. If you mount it on a pretty back plate, it'll be even more accurate.
