I'm hoping this one is better than last year, when my motor crapped out leaving us adrift in the slough and ruining the fireworks. (for us)
This year....a new motor...so I can make the fireworks.
Every year the Fort Worth Boat Club tows a big barge out into the lake packed with fireworks. Then hundreds and hundreds of boats all raft up out in the lake together and they launch the fireworks overhead.
It's a great time until it's time to leave....best to hang out for a while and let the drunks clear the area and get back to the marina. That's always the most dangerous time...but over all the years, there's never been an accident between boats out in the lake proper....but last year a guy in a kayak got run over and killed. He was out in the dark with no lights.
To all, have a great fourth. This year no sailing downtown for the spectacular. The SWMBO's brother is here and he likes to see them from directly under them.
We had a great fourth day. Started with participation in a parade then home for a few hours (long enough to get the bottle tree set in concrete for the Admiral and foam the inside of the mast & boom on the Dolphin) before going to the marina to take the boat out to watch the fireworks put on by the Forth Worth Boat Club. Planned to raft up with Scott but water to rough so moved away and set anchor. We were almost right under the fireworks. Was a very good night-excellent fireworks display. Lots of boats out. We waited for the mayhem to subside some before we headed for the marina. Bow running lights went out for the return trip. Guess I will check that out today.
Good time last night Howard.....too bad we couldn't raft up...but the holding is great out there in the middle....the bottom is about a foot of soft mud, then wet clay...so our Danforth's dig in for a serious bite and hold fast even with 2:1 (depth 35') rode out. I love being right under the fireworks like that, and my buddy and his family had a really great time. Little Jared hit the VBerth after the fireworks and he was OUT until we woke him at the marina. Sure was nice just chilling and chatting in the cockpit as the full moon rose over the lake, waiting for the boats to go home before we got underway.
Only encountered one problem....you encounter people like this every so often...really sad and an embarrassment to the FWBC I think...We had dropped and set the hook a little too close to the barge....an FWBC boat was circling around telling people to move off some....they came by and told me to move back another 50 feet (50 feet!!) I said "50 feet? I just set the anchor, don't you think I'm okay?" His answer? Get this.... "I can call the police"....REALLY? That's your answer? I never said I wouldn't move and I was polite about it...and he goes to that level. What a friggan ***. Well, I won't share here what I told him But he understood I would move 50 feet and reset my anchor....and that I had no respect for anyone who immediately wants to run crying and tattling. That whimp is one of those guys who acts all tough, but as soon as you turn to look at him he cowers and hides behind the authorities. Be a man for God's sake. A more appropriate response would have been along the lines of "Yeah, I know but we're moving everyone back a little".
But other than that one yellow coward representing the FWBC, it was a great night and the fireworks were excellent.
Our fireworks were cancelled due to excessive dryness. Otherwise, a nice holiday, just ended too early. We had 24 family for the July 4 picnic. Would have been over 30, but some didn't make it. How about you guys in the San Diego area. What was the BIG BANG like. Sorry the show didn't last long, but the major explosion must have been spectacular!
