There's HOPE today! Every race, beercan, and weekend, we've had all season have had average winds of less than Force 1! We've had 0mph winds several times!
Today, the forecast is for 40% chance of downpours (really?), winds 14-17 gusts to 24. There's a chance of thunderstorms, so lets hope they don't come, and they don't cancel the race. I mean, I really would not be happy racing in a thunderstorm needlessly, but otherwise the weather sounds decent for an "active sail." I have foulies for myself and crew, so I am good.
I have crew (also unique for me), my brother whose also sailed his whole life. That and my nephew who has sailed a couple times with me (we call him railmeat still). So we should be able to take the wind a little more than we normally can. I also know as the winds pick up, my chances go down.
At those wind speeds, I don't know if those two will be capable of handling the spinnaker though.
Totally blew the start, but I don't think it was just me. We have 3 fleet starts, and we're one design. we start 20 minutes after cruise, and 10 after race. I set my watch, counted down the time, and was 100% on with when the horns would go. We got our timing down to the start line.. I was within 5 seconds to the horn for the 5 minute... so I knew my time was right.
We were 30 feet from the line when the horn should of sounded, and NO sound! crash tack... spin around, and regain where they are and HORN... darnit! we were exactly 1 minute off... now crash tack back, we slowly fell to last across the line. it was ALL downhill from there... but either way we exceeded 7 knots several times, and 6 knots for probably 1/3 of the race. The winds were a blast and our tacks were becoming really efficient.
We managed to work our way up the fleet some, but it was mostly through the cruisers, so I suspect they'll all correct over me. I figure we did real poorly for our fleet, certainly dead last. Probably well down the list overall as well. Regardless it was a FUN race, and we had a great time pounding through waves on the beat up the lake.
These are a GREAT bunch of guys honestly. Some super sailors, and all of them have a great attitudes. But yep, I am my own worst critic. But to me, it was nice to have enough wind to drive the boat up to hull speed+ and just pound out a nice 5 mile course.
