I asked my wife to get me a subscription to Good Old Boat magazine for my recent birthday after picking up a copy at a local flea market this summer. This magazine is targeted at boat owners like us (10-30 year old sailboats). The articles are well written and there is minimal advertising. The subscription is rather pricey ($40/yr.) and they don't offer any discounts to clubs or organizations. If you go to their website (www.goodoldboat.com) they will send you a free electronic copy to preview. Check it out, let me know what you think.
Best regards,
Brian & JoAnne Gleissner Knot So Fast 1984 Catalina 25, SR/SK Traditional Interior Lake Candlewood, CT
BTW, if anyone wants to preview the electronic copy I'll send it to you via e-mail. Send me an e-mail to bgleissner@aol.com and I'll forward it rather than going to the website and registering anything.
Does anybody know of an archive (like Google books) for old boating mags? Aside from just having digital rights to peruse the archive if you have a current subscription, it would be handy to be able to look up old articles from Practical Sailor and GOB.
Bruce - I know GOB offers back issues for sail. It might be worth just getting the ones that feature Catalina articles although I've found all the content very applicable to all sailbouts out size and year.
GOB sells back years in PDF form for a fairly reasonable price (less than their subscription rate). When I find an article that I'd like to read I buy the whole year's worth of the magazine and browse the rest. I've found it to be a good magazine.
Once you have a subscription to Practical Sailor online you can read all of their old content. It is hard to browse but easy to search.
Good Old Boats, while not quite as good as it was, is still well worth the subscription. They send e-mails and have blogs that you can't get unless a subscriber. Practical Sailor is the other great subscription as you have access to their archive, albeit it is not as user friendly as it could be and they do charge for some content if you download to print. If you want to live vicariously they look into Cruising World. Unlike the other two CW has boat show deals so a subscription can be very inexpensive if you sign up at a boat show and, we all can dream of far away places on our 50 foot + . . . . . .
