We kept our boat at the NJ shore, and in the spring the gnats are NASTY. So, one of my first orders of business was to create a screen that completely covered (or as completely as possible) the companionway so it was difficult for the bugs to get in. The PO's made a wood-framed screen that slid into where the hatch boards go, but you had to keep the sliding top closed, which cut back on the light and air in the cabin. I made a screen (trimmed in fabric) that attached to the underside of the cabin top (not the sliding part) via velcro, and that also mates to the wood-framed screen. I also made a screen that covers the forward hatch. I still have all three screens, and would be happy to give them to another member here. The wood-framed screen is pretty big; better to find someone who can do a local(ish) pick-up.

NOTE: In my case, PLEASE don't confuse stars/number of posts with actual knowledge. On any topic.
great idea Jim. I have seen std screens on a neighbors c27. snapped to the companionway. we have a wood framed screen also that is bulky and not convenient for storage.
Gary, Shipping the wood frame is going to be tough, it's a single piece that takes up the entire companionway (takes the place of the hatch/crib boards). I'll see what I can do about pictures.
Here's the wooden frame. Dimensions are 20" across at the bottom, 31 3/4" across at the top, 31 1/16 high from (approximately) center to center of the two cross pieces.
Here's the screen that spans under the slider. The first picture is the top, that goes against the roof of the cabin:
Here's the other side. The velcro attaches to the velcro on the wood frame (which goes on the outside).
Here's what they look like attached. The thick blue strip allows it to flex.
Very nice! I wish you were closer. I'd meet you somewhere/ Unfortunately it would be too hard to ship something that size. Surely someone in your end of the country can use this.
Thank you for taking the measurements and pictures. Now that everyone can see your invention I'll bet it will go quickly.
Thanks. I was lazy and didn't want to make the part to replace the wooden frame. I have some excess material. If nobody is interested, I'll send you the fabric pieces and excess material, if you want 'em. That would give you most of what you need.

Previous owner of my boat made some nice screens, but I'm going to copy Jim and make a section that will cover the sliding top so that I can leave it open also. After seeing how well you guys were playing nice with one another in the spiniker thread I felt compelled to offer a possible suggestion........... Depending on how you have the screen attached to the frame ( so as to not completely destroy it incase it's perminantly glued) , why not just break the upper right and bottom left joints, fold and or roll it in half and mail it that way? A triangular shaped tube couldn't be that expensive to UPS. However if the screen material is glued to the frame for the long haul, I completely understand that my suggestion is not a good one. I was just trying to help..... Steve
I tried to disassemble the screen, but there was no way to do it and still have something that could be put back together as a functional unit. So, I tossed that screen. Gary, since no one else seems to be interested, I have the fabric-lined screens in a box ready to go out to you. If you'll PM me your address, I'll get them in the mail tomorrow.
Steve, Sorry, I should have characterized that better - the screen was very "lightly" made - 2 or 3, 1/4" thick pine strips stapled (not glued) on top of each other. The person who made it even went so far as to reuse scrap pieces, so one side of the frame would sometimes have 2 or 3 pieces butted up against each other. I pulled a few of the staples out to see how it was made and whether I could do as you suggested. That's the point where I realized that, once it was disassembled, Gary would have no way of knowing how to put it back together (unless he likes jigsaw puzzles). So, I just decided to trash it. It would have wound up in the trash anyway, if no one wanted it. So, it's not a big deal from my perspective.
Gary, once you get the package, I can give you tips on how to make the screen for the lower part of the companionway. Or, you could just open the top and attach my screen to the back of your hatch boards. You won't get as much wind that way (obviously) but it could be a decent temporary fix. The only thing you'll need to buy is some outdoor thread. I have some on a big spool, but I can't see an easy way to get it to you that won't wind up being a knotted mess.

I have not had access to my personal email as I have been out of town in meetings. I'll be able to access it this weekend and will get you paid via Paypal.
My wife tells me the screens have not arrived yet and not having the email with the tracking number I haven't had a way to see when to expect delivery. Not a big deal, I'm in no hurry to receive them.

Did you get my PayPal payment? I sent it Sunday afternoon.
