Unexpectedly sold Island Time today...a fellow Marina member saw me taking pictures to put on Craigslist and asked how much? His brother-in-law was looking for a project boat and Island Time fit the bill, both in price and project status. The brother-in-law looked at her last night (Thursday) and I got paid today.
It sold a lot easier and quicker than expected...I like my wife's Watkins, but IT was special. Thinking and talking about sailing got me through my last deployment, I bought her less than a month after that year-long Kandahar vacation. Although it was in pretty good shape when I got her, I still made some upgrades, spent a few (yeah right, just a few) bucks, and spilt a little blood to make her mine. So, although it nice to move on, it was still a little saddening to sign the title over today.
She will stay in the Marina and I hope to convince the new owner to sign up for the Association. Like others that lurk around, I still plan on paying my dues and supporting this association.

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"> What Tom is too modest to also add is that in addition to those upgrades, he learned to sail Island Time really well! He became a force to be reckoned with on the race course! Now we get to see how fast a Watkins 25 can be made to sail!!!!
Pearl is a great boat, but an older (anyone older than me is "older", I've never quite reached that age) couple on my dock swear they will call me if they ever part with their "one owner" Watkins. I know that boat is a seductive temptress. Just the same, I would be equally sad to part with Pearl.

Chuck--the Watkins 25, which ended up as the Com-Pac 25 (briefly), isn't going to give you much trouble--especially if it's the shoal draft version. It's a really nice vessel--I started getting serious about a Com-Pac 25 once, but it was very, <i>very</i> "dear" (lots of teak and joinery). And since Com-Pac only built the shoal-draft keel version, with no wing, and with what seemed like a rather shallow rudder for its beam, I wondered about its windward capability. But with its brightwork and bronze ports, it sure was purdy!! (My Admiral loved it!)

Dave...Chuck's tangled with "Comfortably Numb" (my W-25) before, and I know he's worried. Here's a pic from Apr 2011 (before the re-naming ceremony) in which I passed him for the win...at least, that is how I remember it, I'm sure Chuck's version is different.
Hell, we had it moving so well the wife decided to dangle her toes...
It is a shoal keel and it does tend to slide sideways a little. What is gives up in performance to the C25 it makes up in comfort. They are a better boat for staying on board, something interests the wife much more than racing.
There are a couple old C22s for sale in the Marina, maybe I'll try and pick one up real cheap and set her up for racing...
Don't get me wrong--the Watkins/Com-Pac 25 should be a very pleasant cruiser--I liked it a lot! I'm confident it goes "forward" more than it "slides sideways", so it'll get where you want to go, in style. But the PHRF numbers I've seen don't distinguish the shoal keel, which could hurt in handicapped racing. What have you found?
BTW, I'm suspicious those photos of your bow were from Chuck's stern (with a telephoto lens).
Dave...If you look at the first pic you will see a big number 1 in the main sail of the boat behind us, that is Confetti. The other shot...that may have been from Confetti
Our club uses it's own unique handicap system, we do not use PHRF ratings. Don't want to get in a big handicap discussion, but I should do alright with the W-25. Probably won't win much, bury the rail, or spill my beer, but still have a great comfortable day sailing.

OK you guys!!! Obviously Tom has been working too hard and its affecting his memory! (however my memory is simply wearing out and seems to have a lot of corroded contacts...I always thought soaking them in Capt Morgan would help clean them, but I'm not so sure, but at least it helps me not worry about it!!!)
Tom mentioned the club handicapping system we use, and like any system that attempts to provide a handicap that addresses BOTH the boat and skipper/crew to make things come out even for everyone, changing conditions end up having the pendulum crashing thru the walls in both directions a lot <grin>. I used to be a handicapper for PHRF in Galveston Bay, and we struggled with doing the same type of thing there, and actually did have some success with it. We are looking into other ways for handicapping, but till then the idea is to get out there and have fun, and do everything we can to get more of our sailors out of the Marina and on the water!! Don't want to hijack Tom's Thread though, so maybe picking folk's experience on club handicapping might be a good new thread on the racing forum?
Meanwhile, you can bet I will keep a sharp eye on Tom and Jean's Watkins!!! <grin>

Other racers might be most interested in where it leads...
