Hello, we recently purchased a 1984 C 25 it is located in what is presently a frozen north Idaho and was wondering about changing a boats name. I was told once it is bad luck to change a boats name. Just wondering what thoughts there are about the subject. We are looking forward to the Spring sailing season. Yes we have paid the $22 to join as I have found many postings that have already answered many newby questions.

There is a ritual you can use for changing a boat's name without angering the gods (and someone here can furnish you a reference to it), but I changed my boat's name without performing the ritual, and she made it through Hurricane Sandy with nary a scratch. Of course, I should refer you to the disclaimer that the officers have displayed on this website: "The Officers, Staff and members of this site only provide information based upon the concept that anyone utilizing this information does so at their own risk and holds harmless all contributors to this site." Good luck!
In terms of name change. Many people say it's a bad omen to change name of the boat. I got my C25 in 2008 and I wasn't crazy on the name - Shy Tuna. I don't even know the history of the name and it sounds bit silly. However, I am bit on superstitious side and decided not to change the name and the name grew on me over the last few years.
But I know many sailors that changed names of their vessels and they're still sailing (including renamed vessels) :-)
At the end of the day it's what you believe in and how superstitious you are.
We bought a boat whose name had been changed. We renamed the boat back to its original name, and performed every ceremony we could find. It was fun, and an excuse to share some spirits and have a celebration. Superstitious? I don't know, maybe more of a party opportunist?
There are other "historic" rituals--some involving a virgin woman, although I'll leave the details on that for your discovery... Use Vigor's or make up your own--in any case, have some fun with it. A boat's name should be a meaningful and (most times) fun thing--make the most of that!

The name on our boat reminded the admiral of her X. We had to change it. Really enjoyed the ceremony with some friends. Welcome to the group and enjoy.
Oh my god thank you! "The Great Surprise" that is downright funny... Ok, I'll share, I changed mine too, because the prior name was "Happy Flapper." Sorry had to go. Present name mixes "chutes" with "shooting dog," which is a Field Trial description for a dog that runs big and fast, and handles flawlessly. A shooting dog is a bigger running gun dog. Our biggest winning Brittany was a shooting dog, he's also my shadow these days.
Ritual or no ritual, change the name, enjoy your boat, and a very huge welcome here.

We will decide about the name change when the tarps come off this spring. Fair winds to all. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Do the name change ceremony in the water and not on the hard. Neptune will be much happier. Also, Neptune and Poseidon have given up on the virgin thing. But a woman peeing on your bow usually makes them happy. That or a quick flash of the boobies.

I left mine the same as the PO because it seemed to fit. Plus, at almost 50 years old, I couldn't find any virgins. Maybe the next boat but for now she stands as "Knot So Fast".

I'm too caucasian to know anything about the dance itself, I just know it from the B-52's song 'Dance This Mess Around':

Haha I think back in the day when i bought the boat i stumbled on that song when i was searching the name. But I figured... nahhh.. there's gotta be something else.
I just listened to this song now.. haha.. goes way back.... but very cool. I guess one of the POs must of been huge fan of B-52s and maybe this is the original name. I know that me and 2 previous owners never changed the name... so that takes me back to mid 90s. Now I'm glad i never changed the name.
Do the Shy Tuna dance !! (I'm dancing now - probably bad mental picture)
Run a search on the phrase "tough c25" on the 25/250 forum and check out the pictures of the 'Emery C". I changed the name to "Emery C" after I bought her. We went through the appropriate name changing ceremony complete with the "good" champagne. After viewing the pictures of our boat, one must conclude that a properly executed ceremony will negate any negative luck associated with a name change
