I have my mast down and plan on replacing the upper shrouds this go around. I was surprised to find under the spreader boots that the shrouds pass through the notch without spreader wire and there is a roll pin pressed in place at the outward end of the spreader to prevent the shroud from coming out of the notch. There also are no holes for routing seizing wire. I cannot remove the existing shrouds without removing the pins as there is not sufficient room to maneuver either end of the shroud through the notch. It also looks like it will require drilling the pins out as they are severely frozen in place. So my question is would it be better to drill out those pins and replace them with a s/s cotter pin or drill holes inward of the shroud and use seizing wire to capture them. I might mention the roll pins showed no apparent signs of deterioration or abrasion from the spreader so the technique seems to work well and has not been subject to the eventual degradation experienced with seizing wires.

Probably how it was done in the 70s era boats, My 87 has SS seizing wire. If it were my boat and the pins looked like a PIA to do or are corroded then I would just change it over to wire.
Haven't been able to get back down and work on them yet. Probably this weekend. Charging my drill battery though. Last time I tried to remove a frozen pin I cracked my masthead.
Notwithstanding Red's expertise... the spreader tips are plastic. Replacements are available, but i think I had to go through CD to get them. I would be very wary of heating them up in an effort to remove these pins.
