I plan on a few mods this winter. One mod is to build a quick-link from rudder to motor. I know I have seen threads on this before but never saved them. Can anyone refer me to these past posts for ideas?
I used the Stearns Motor link auxillary steering kit in stainless steel. This can be hard to find - it seems that it's widely available online for a few months, then everyone's out of it for a year or so. It can sometimes be found in zinc coated (for about 1/3 the price), which might be good enough for your lake. You might have better luck finding it in local marine stores. It's made for a kicker motor on fishing boats, so you don't need to find a store that sell sailboats - Lighthouse Harbor, Bakker, The Boat Shop, or even Rusty Palmer might have it.
As you can see in the pictures that I linked, I used some 1" aluminum angle iron to fabricate a mounting point that goes at the top of the rudder, attached to the same hole that the emergency rudder attaches to.
From what I remember of your mooring location and the still waters of Lake Wally, I'd question whether your really need this, though.
Greetings All from sunny St Helens! I installed Arlyn's soft link and have great success. I keep my 250WK in a slip that is perpendicular to the current flow on the Columbia River with tidal changes I have had some real challenges getting back into my slip. The soft link has given me slow speed turning that has taken out some of the white knuckles.
