I found this on my new boat when cleaning out the interior last week. I'm perplexed. Is it a motor cover? It has a zipper on one side, button snaps at the bottom, and a curvature on the top. See pic here:
The snaps probably are intended to be attached to snaps set in the deck somewhere. The snaps might be located somewhere in the deck forward of the companionway. I would try to see if they line up with snaps set in the deck, or anywhere else. If they do, that might give you a clue to it's intended purpose.
But, I'd phone the PO and ask him. When I bought my present boat, I had to call him a couple times to get some information. Most PO's wouldn't mind.
Dave, I think you're onto something. I believe that's what it is. I'll fit it up when I'm down at the boat next. I'm starting to get my hands dirty tearing her apart and starting to get her ready for the water. I've probably got 2 more full days of work before I even get her launched at the marina. I have the replace the keel cable, some through-hull valves (aft sink and ice chest), paint the hull, etc...

It can create a maintenance nightmare and could reduce rather than enhance the value of your boat. But, of course, it is your boat.
