I always remove my main halyard from the headboard and take it to a stanchion base. If you don't you will likely have halyard slap.

...unless you mitigate halyard slap with a simple bungee to a shroud.

FWIW, I always disconnect the main halyard, wrap it around the lower shoud twice, then attach it to the mini-stay bail at the base of the starboard stanchion, and then tension it. My neighbors seem to appreciat this.

Tensioning it alongside the mast always seemed to result in slapping (and possibly chafing) if the wind blew hard enough.

Bungee to a shroud sounds like it would also work.

Not sure I want to leave it attached all the time, because about 50% of the time I move it to the aft hole on the headboard for greater leech tension, depending on conditions.
