Lesson: You don't want to crew on an AC-72 sailboat in SF Bay. If you do, and the boat crashes as the Swedish boat just did in a practice run, you might die, as one crew member did yesterday.

Let's get this straight: These boats are at the outer limits of performance. They are 72' long and almost as wide. They hit speeds that are at or beyond their design limits, and way beyond what sailing vessels (including all previous AC yachts) have reached. The emergency response for the Swedish boat's crash, from my view looking at the video, was.......... I'm still searching for a word.

I don't like mulithull racing for that reason. Reminds me of nascar. ( OMGoodness I said it. ) In the early days when people would get killed.

I think they should require the car seat they use in nascar. ( and some air tanks )Maybe a drop pod.

Right now it looks like a good way to get your head torn off.

Any of you guys get the Sail-World.com newsletter emails. In addition to the lead article on the Simpson tragedy, there are 3 Am-Cam videos of the 2nd Oracle boat training. The entire boat is out of the water except for the leeward foil and the rudder - a 72 ft. airfoil boat!
Now both teams have crashed, in essentially the same maneuver.
And this is in S.F. Bay. Just think how much more dangerous they would be offshore.

I feel like I'm too young to be a curmudgeon, but these AC boats are not sailboats. I'd like to see a return to beautiful mono-hulls racing one another. Rich guys measuring their...is not all that interesting.

I used to race on a 15' catamaran, nothing like these AC boats, but it was fun. I have another friend who used to race offshore in catamarans (Hobie 18 or 20 I think?), he's got a giant scar on his arm where they had to do surgery to set the bone that got broken after the boat pitch poled off of Oahu & his arm got caught in the stay as he flew past it. These AC boats are monsters compared to either of these two examples. I'll admit I like watching them race simply due to the speed, but an article I read last night about this indicates they've gone to this extreme to try to engage younger viewers (on TV) so the sport can become more mainstream. If that's the case, I too would prefer that they go back to racing monohulls that generally don't kill you because you're running them on the raggedy edge of their performance envelope.

And for me personally, I hate when things like this happens because of the inevitable questions from Rita about our boat doing something similar. When things like this happen, she tries her best to turn it into something to worry about on our boat, even when there's virtually no comparison except they both float & have sails.
