I'm installing a Lazy Jack on my standard 25 rig Catalina. Talking with Catalina Direct about the location of the Eye Strap on the mast, they said a couple of feet more or less than the specified dimension of 10'-0" would not make much difference. Has anyone installed the Catalina Direct Lazy Jack and after using it felt that the Eye Strap on the mast should be lower or higher than the recommended 10'-0"? Since the Lay Jack only effectively captures the lower part of the sail, I would think lower might be better since it would interfere less with the sail when raised; yes or no?
I installed lazy jacks of my own design two years ago. CD was right that you have flexibility in where to mount the eye straps, and you're right that lower = less potential for hang-ups when raising the sail. But I wouldn't go too low, because you'll lose some of the vertical lift that helps contain the sail. I mounted mine right under the spreaders, and it has worked out great.
