We are heading to the Bay and Jewfish Creek for the week early Monday Morning. Lot's of prep over the weekend for a pre-dawn trail down to Black Point Marina.

Hot Dogs, Burgers, and Pusser's Rum will be included in the provisioning.

What are your plans?

Paul

Hopefully I'll find time to squeeze in a sail. We're having a BBQ at the marina I have to be there for, and it's my turn to teach sailing the following weekend, so can't plan anything too extensive.

We've had a very rainy start to the season but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm planning to do a 2 day passage to St. Margaret's Bay with an overnight in Rogue's Roost. About 50nm total. I have a co-worker with an extra mooring in the head of the bay so I'll leave the boat there for the week and come back to Halifax in one shot th enext weekend. The prevailing winds are SW so it makes the ride home mostly down hill.

Has the weather kept you home?

On the Gulf coast, it's been raining for two straight days. And it looks like it will be more of the same tomorrow.....

We've had rain showers and thunderstorms for the last week straight! But it's supposed to be sunny on July 4th afternoon. We're heading out to see fireworks from all around from a few dozen docks and yards around our local river as well as from several towns nearby.

Should be fun!!!

Our little lake has a decent fireworks display. I've been scheduled to see the display at least 5 times over the last 20 years, and due to weather, or schedule conflicts I've missed it each time.

This year, I have the time, I have it off, and I know the lake is NUTS, but I really want to join the sail club for their "4th raft up," to see the fireworks. My beautiful wife has off, and wants to see them as well.

Thanks to a member here, I have a great rail mounted BBQ, and we're planning on bringing some Kabobs with us, to share with others. Some great food, some good beer (that I WILL NOT DRINK - see threads on BUI)... and we'll generally just enjoy ourselves as a cruiser for once. The weather looks to finally break for the 4th, the ONLY day in the last 8 that will supposedly be dry.

Crossing fingers that I'll finally have good weather to watch these fireworks.

We've taken this whole week off (something they've never let us do at work as her software and my computer systems run our company, but we've managed to make those systems reliable enough for them to relent on time off for us), and we've been soaking up some local places to see, and generally have enjoyed a great Stay-ca-tion..

The next 3-4 days are the sailing part of our 10 days off, including the raft up, fireworks, swimming, long day sail Sat, and Sunday is our race number 3 (actually 2nd counted).

Quick report.
Boat ready to pull early monday. On the Bay before noon and plenty of parking space at the Marina lot.
Heavy wind; Motored over to Billy's Point. Anchored on the North side shallows, just as well, Wind piped up multiple times overnight. Rough.
Tuesday; Tried to sail, but low winds were in the high teens, saw 25 early on. Chickened out. Hung out at the Anchorage.
Wednesday, Motored over to Elliot Key to take some pics of the Damage last year by H Sandy. (Will post in an Album) Anchored off Elliott key harbor and dinked ashore. Dink motor was not happy, crapped out returning to JD, had to row half way. Peggy now understands about not steering towards your destination in strong winds in a rowed dink!
Anchor stuck in a rock! The new Danforth style anchor was from WM to replace the old one that broke a weld on a previous trip. Could not budge it! Only in 4'6" of water, so waded out to the anchor with a leash back to the boat. Snorkel and Mask allowed getting down to it and pulling it out.
NOTE. the new style anchor does not have a 'tripping ring' so nowhere to tie a line and float that would have made this even easier.
Moved to Anchor north of Elliott key harbor inside the no swim zone which is a very popular anchorage. Spent the rest of the day here, winds bounced around high teens low twenties.

Thursday; Hot dogs for lunch, really not a lot of boats on the water for the 4th! perhaps about a hundred all seen. Only 6 sailboats seen all day. Wind too high to sail today.
11pm: Wind pipes up again, only much higher tonight! Much! and we had seen 35knts over the past couple of days. but tonight the winds were screeching through the rigging. Been there before, well prepared. Lifejackets & foulies ready, even had a tether and jack line at hand. Hand held Garmin used to warn us of anchor drag, and it did! FAST!
All hands on deck, figure traffic astern of us, who we would hit, and who we would miss. Anchor did not dig in again. Started outboard and during the shreeking winds I pulled the anchor, weighed HEAVY but with GRASS! Could barely pull it up. Several dunks and it was clear. Free at last, we motored away from those behind us.
Back to a new anchorage and dug in again, felt good, I hit the sack after stowing the boom tent.

Two hours later that shreeking returned. Quickly doning foulies and lifejackets while keeping an eye on the Garmin. We dragged again, nothing behind us this time! But this time we only moved 45 feet and it dug in hard. Five minutes of watching the Garmin and the lights of nearby boats, no sign of any more movement despite the high winds.

Back to bed with the prospect of a 4:15 alarm to head back to the Marina. Didn't happen! hit the Dismiss button and pulled the sheets back over our heads.

Mid morning we motor sailed back to Black Point Marina, 2'- 3' seas in the Bay, but we hit 7.2 knts (5.8GPS) under just the jib and Nissan. By 4:30 we were home and ready for Lunch!

And that was my Vacation!

Paul
