I just bought a 1980 Cat 25 swing keel and I am keeping it moored on the Chesapeake Bay. The PO stated he never had water on the cabin sole before. While the boat is not moving it is dry but when motored or sailing (keel up or down) a small trickle of water comes in at the aft Keel Head housing on the starboard side into the cabin area. The storage compartment on the port side is dry. I motored yesterday for an hour and a half and was able to wipe it dry with paper towels, so the rate of the leak is not alarming. I have a L shape setup. Not knowing (new boat buyer) I wasn't sure what this area was suppose to look like. The PO before the owner I purchased from must of done some work in this area, but did a nice job making a teak cover to go over the opening he cut. Will try to add picture. My question is what type of repair is possible? The pivot pin was replace by the 1st owner and the winch and cable was replaced in last 2 years, no leaks or problems at that end of the keel. I haven't figured out how to add a photo yet.

But, are you sure the water isn't just coming in from the top of the pipe. Occasionally, water can spit out the top of the pipe in choppy conditions.

Wrong end of the keep. I can send pics in an email for you to see. All is well by the steps and the cable hose. It is forward by the bathroom/ head of keel. I don't know how to post a pic on this forum
Ape-X, I did a quick search of Keel Drop and that looks like my scenario. "Dragon Tail Swing Keel Trunk Fix" really looks like my issue. My best guess at this time is the PO 2 owners ago must have experience a keel drop and repaired it. Now the repair is starting to fail. I have to say the repair job on Dragon Tail looks a lot cleaner and professional then the repair that was done on my boat. UGGHHHH! guess I uncovered a can of worms on this!! So now the question is, if it only trickles in a small amount when moving, do I enjoy the rest of the season in the water (cleaning up the water after use) or pull it to repair. I have only owned for 2 weeks now and have been on it twice! Any thoughts what this my cost?????
Fix it now, don't wait. You can't be comfortable and enjoy yourself if you're sailing around in a boat with a damaged hull taking on water. Also, congratulations on your new boat. Something will always need fixing, but its worth it.
The top of the keel exerts lateral forces on the sides of the keel trunk/housing. This happens more while underway, especially when sailing. You likely have a crack in the keel trunk that separates enough to let water into the boat when the keel leans on it.
If the crack gets worse while underway, you could go from a minor problem to a major one quickly. Without knowing more about the quality of the PO's repair, you could even sink the boat.
Thanks everyone for your help. I spoke with the gentleman who documented the repair of Dragon Tail in the Technical Tips area. He was very helpful and informative of the process at hand. I thank everyone to for the help. I look forward to this forum and the great information to come!
