Summer.... Big high over the east could stick around till fall. 90s today and wind from the north at 1. So my sailing season is over till September. No go on the boat work as I end up swimming. Time to get in shape to attempt a dive weekend if the Gulf waters clear before the next Hurricane. Last months rain has left me feeling like a winter shut in. My Florida friends said Chantal had the streets swimmin down there.
Soooo.. you guys up north have gotta post some pics of the Summer Fun.

Been pretty hot and humid here in the Ohio Valley for the past week or two. Plenty of rain also, lake level is as high as I've ever seen it. This weekend will dip to the low 80s, winds 12-25 on Saturday . May be time to breakout the GoPro!
Yesterday... Hottest of the week (or summer), with 0-5 knot offshore (hot) cat's paws, cloudless sky,... and my day to drive Resolute at the Seaport. I took a long, cool shower when I got home, and picked up an order of nice, cool sushi.
(I know, I know, Houston--96 deg. and 70% is nothing... ...and sushi is bait.)
The heat is predicted to break Sunday, the day of the big launch celebration for the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in the universe. She's been on the hard for 4-1/2 years getting re-built below the waterline, to the tune of about $7 mil. (Now you know why you own plastic!) I expect to have a full load aboard Sarge to watch the launch.
HA! Seems like it hasn't rained in 2 years here in Houston and it's already been over 100 a couple of days.
Of course I'm going on vacation Friday and it's been raining all week here and in the Texas Hill Country where we're going. Supposed to clear up starting tomorrow with highs in the upper 90's by the weekend. Unfortunately the water is probably not going to be it's normal clear, beautiful emerald green.
I think the high the last couple of days has been in the 80's here in Houston due to the rain.
Our June rainfall was about 2 inches below record. I've never seen so much green in the south. Green and red ( clay ). The water is above the banks and up to the tree line. I haven't been sailing as much as weed whacking the yard all spring...
Cool Sushi ( Masago ) ... sweet!
Holy Mackerel .. that Charles w Morgan launch is gonna be something else... What a Cool Ship! ( and you said yours was a stinkboat )
Although we've had a little more rain than normal, still getting a decent sea breeze in the afternoons. Got a few decent sails in these last couple weeks. Come on down.
We've been hotter than normal with up until this past week, higher than average rainfall. Our lake is up, but they are draining it to hit pre-determined levels. Winds have been terrible this week as well. was OK yesterday morning at 6-8mph, which is what I saw when I arrived yesterday at 6pm... but when I hit the water at 6:30, it quickly died off... Just before I took some time to try out my new spinnaker companionway launch bag from Harken. Yeah I did a solo spin launch and retrieve, but it's REAL easy to do that in 0-5mph winds. Yeah yeah yeah, pictures or it didn't happen. and
OH and you can thank me for placing the burgee in the first picture (just noticed that actually).
Well while we are on the weather, here on Sandusky Bay,OH we had 17 straight days of rain. In May when I launched I had 5ft og water at my dock, now it is up 6ft 8 in. Last Wed. we had three tornadoes kit Bellevue and sustained winds in the 90 mph range. I had no damage to my house, but parts of town were devastated. 12 miles north in Sandusky wind and rain nothing serious. Today the temperature is suppose to reach into the 90's with a heat index of over 100. Maybe try for a sail this evening.

I purchased one of those working scale model steam tractors for my grandsons one xmas. One brief demo and it was back to the video games.

(I sometimes get caught downwind of her on the river--talk about a $+!nkp*+. ) She runs every day but Tuesday (when I drive Resolute), and does an evening cruise down to Fishers Island Sound and back.
The catboat in the picture is Breck Marshall, which does half-hour rides. Or you can rent your own Beetle Cat.

I WOODEN do that again if I were you I'll will say this, the Sabing sure looks nicer than the Badger. Someday I hope to visit the Mystic Seaport. When I was young and growing up in Detroit I spent my summers going to Bob-lo Island. This was Canadian amusement park that you got to by taking one of the Bob-lo boats. Very classic WOODEN Steamers. http://bobloboat.com/history.html One of the things I remember the most was being able to look down into the engine room and see the mechanical operations of the ship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qYOhplVFj8
My most vivid recollection of the Island Queen paddlewheeler that served Coney Island in Cincinnati was when I was about 5. We were on the top deck when the steam whistle blew, and I remember that it was like being in a shower, as the steam condensed and fell on us. Sadly, the boat blew up shortly afterward, in 1947, killing 19 and injuring 18. I was also intrigued to be able to see the engine operating.

quote:
Been aboard Sabino for a dinner cruise, which launched directly next to the CWM it seems. I have some pictures around here somewhere from last year.

Last year (and the previous three years) the Morgan was on the hard at the south end of the Seaport. Sabino sails from a slip near the main entrance--toward the middle of the Seaport.
BTW, some of the wood used to replace Morgan's hull framework came from ancient live oak trees that were knocked down in hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Seaport sent a team down to MS and LA to find them before they were burned. They were cut up on the lumber mill here on the property. Something good out of something tragic.
