Always surprised what I find.. So I normally scrub the bottom with a snorkel, but I was kinda bored so I took the scuba gear and spent some quality time on the bottom and low and behold I get to actually look at the bottom of the keel and it seems a seam runs straight down the middle..

Never noticed that.

Yeah, I'm so obsessed that I considered creating a LIFT to get my boat off the trailer JUST to look there. God knows what I'll find. I don't think putting #3000 of stress on my pole barn truss structure would have been smart though.

I've had the same thought, but by building a cradle I could lift the boat with on hydraulic jacks & cribbing. The only place I'm positive I have barnacles & mussels growing is on the bottom flat of my wing keel. I saw them last time I "dove" (swimming goggles are not particularly good for diving, unless you have a nose plug as well). I tried knocking some of the them off with a brush handle, but I had no leverage, and I can't hold my breath anywhere near as long as I used to be able to. The rest of the hull is amazingly clean. Trinidad SR paint rocks for the area our boat's in.

I left a coupla barnacles in Westbrook CT this week - I found myself in 4 ft of water on the wrong side of the channel coming out of Pilot's Point marina. Find some soft sand and scrape the bottom of your keel from time to time. Just make sure its mud and sand, not granite!

That's exactly what I'd like to do...on a rising tide.

Right outside Milford Harbor is a bay called "The Gulf" that's surrounded on three sides by a rocky bluff to east, a sandy beach with extended flats to north and a sand bar and island to west. On calm days, especially at this point in the season you'll see boaters - both sailors and power boaters - wearing a snorkel and mask cleaning the barnacles off the prop. I've seen sailors intentionally ground in the soft bottom on a rising tide to clear off the grass around waterline, skeg, rudder and prop.
