Hi all... I've retired from my 38yr business and now have the freedom to resume summer Great Lakes cruising and will be recommissioning R&R to make ready for a 2014 summer cruise and most likely a winter shake down cruise at Pensacola or Texas coast.
It has grieved me that the boat has sat idle so long but there was little that could be done but wait for the cruising window to re-open. I'd thought a couple of times about selling it and then if the window opened again, to re-aquire, but the boat was so suitable to my needs that it made sense to hang onto.
I don't anticipate major effort to recommission and will enjoy working on it again and feeling the breeze off its bow.
Glad to hear that you kept the boat and are still "one of us",... we look forward to your travel and exploration reports
Presently the two of us are sailing for 3 weeks the Gulf Islands on the West Coast of BC and enjoying the Islands. Then after 2 weeks home on to Cameroon, Africa for 2 months and one month to Holland. Retirement to us means dong things we like to do and is busier than work ever was. Just love it!!!
You guys are really making me jealous as I have many many many years to retirement :-( . It's good or bad depending on how you look at it.
Arlyn: that is awesome that you kept the boat for so long and now getting back into it.
I'm in a similar situation - well a lot smaller scale. We just had a baby in May... We decided to put the boat in the water thinking that we'll be able to balance - was I ever wrong. Well season is more than half way through as I have only 2 months left, and so far I've been to the boat few times to work on it, but i haven't raised the sails yet! :-( I've contemplated selling the boat, but decided that it will be a lot more difficult to buy a boat in few years (daycare fees etc...), so I decided to buy a trailer asap(which is another adventure)and we'll take the boat to our family farm for next 2 years. And in 2015 hopefully I'll be sailing and working on the boat with little helper.
Anyways.... I'm looking forward to your recommissioning stories.

I am really happy for you, Arlyn ... that is GREAT news! Get ready for some fun
From a new 250 owner on the block, GREAT NEWS "STEERING KITS can't wait to see your post. I must say I just keep putting all your mod's on my 1995 WB #24
I am sure your business is missing your energy. having said that, it has been a pleasure to review your articles and website. I have many mods I plan based on your concepts. I have had my '05 250 WK "CCCCIQUE" for about one year now (second owner #875)and sail twice a week at Lake Roosevelt (Arizona). Congratulations and we look forward to your site recovery as well.
The first effort toward the recommissioning was a wash job. The boat has been inactive for ten years now and this now is only the second wash since. It had a bit of algae on the top surfaces. The same stuff that grows on roofs in the south and reason white shingles are no longer used, the stuff loves white.
The good news is the clean up wasn't too difficult and surprisingly the non skid areas easier though I'm not sure why. A scrub pad cuts the algae easily but worried me about dealing with the non skid areas. Got the light duty pressure washer out and surprisingly easily cleaned the non skid areas but wouldn't remove all from the rest of the boat which required the scrub pad. It could be that the non skid sealer put on many years ago is still in play... who knows?
I do recall that the non skid was a pain to keep clean until sealing it and after, was no problem.
Much more work to do recommissioning but wanted to get the boat cleaned before cooler weather. Might even get some fall sailing in before our light winter.
