Just curious. Do racers have software to analyse GPS track data after an event, e.g., histogram of speeds by leg, ave speeds for a given time period or distance, course summaries, etc? The simple stats off my Oregon 450(Garmin) are useless. I'm not a racer, but on those great days, it would be fun to look back at performance. Thanks
In the Governor's Cup race, (75 nm down the Chesapeake Bay) each boat has the option to carry a transponder, so that the position of each boat is recorded in real time, and interested people can follow the progress of each boat, and compare it to others. By analyzing your track after the race, you can compare it with the tracks of other boats, and see where you either gained or lost ground on the winning boats, or other boats with a comparable phrf rating. If you lost ground because you were in an adverse current or in a light air zone, you can see it clearly, and perhaps plan a smarter track next year. In the Gov Cup race, it isn't enough to sail the boat fast and efficiently. You have to navigate it well through the varying winds and changing tidal currents, gaining speed with a favorable current, and avoiding the effects of an adverse tidal current.
A Garmin GPS Map76 will track your course and you can review it in realtime or later. For club racing and training, our club may purchase a software package next year that will do just that, so racers can compare how they sailed after the race. Skippers will be able to purchase an app, for about $10, that will work on a smartphone, making their phone the transponder. We demo'd it a few months ago. Pretty cool. Skippers will not be able to access ant data during a race, so there won't be any possibility of one boat having an advantage over another during a race, but all will be able to review results after returning to the clubhouse. I think the cost is around $1k. It's called Kattack, and here's a link to their website: http://www.kattack.com/
I'm surprised there does not appear to be any open source package. I can plot tracks using GPS Visualizer, Open CPN, and GoogleEarth but I haven't found anything that offers descriptive statistics. Alex, thanks for the GPS Visualizer link, however, my Oregon 450 does not output a field representing speed so haven't been able to duplicate the webpage example you forwarded. Speed is calculated in Open CPN for each track but the field is not in the exported properties table. Will keep looking.
