I just picked up a 78 c-25 fixed keel. I had a question about the knot meter, the wires are cut off the back of the meter. Where is the paddle wheel mounted in the hull? I think one wire goes to 12 volts and the other to the paddle wheel correct. Thanks

I have a '78 fixed keel and my paddle wheel is/was located on the Starboard side. I say was, because It was damaged and so I simply filled the hole with fiberglass/resin at the last haulout. I use my GPS tracker to tell me how fast I go.......when I want to know. Here is a picture of the location of the paddle wheel on the starboard side of the keel area....

As for how it connects up, can't help because mine isn't hooked up and always shows about 2.5 knots.

The bilge of your boat (where the keel bolts are) should be just below this mark.

Not on a trailer in the water. I need to find the connections inside the boat,so I will start by looking around the starboard side interior. Thanks

Mine works but it always shows at least 3/4 of a knot, even when tied up at the dock. Can that be fixed without replacing the knot meter?

There is probably a reason the wires are cut off. . You really need a wiring diagram or at least somebody to trace the wire and color codes for the display unit and paddle wheel. There are several ways it could be connected even if you only have two wire coming from the display.

With only 2 wires coming off the back of the gauge,I can only see 2 ways it could be hooked up.Wires were removed when the boat had the interior done by the PO. I guess when I find the wheel I will know what color to match it too on the gauge. Thanks

On my boat, the knotmeter transducer is mounted under the VBerth next to the transducer for the old depthfinder. I cut the wires on my old depthfinder transducer since I installed a fishfinder and an in-hull transducer which sits inside the hull held by a glob of a toilet bowl wax ring. There is a very good chance that your knotmeter/transducer are not working any longer. What is the mfr ? My knotmeter is an SR Mariner and while I could have potentially replaced it with a different mfr's knotmeter, the footprint for the transducer would have been different and would require re-work of the original hole for the old transducer. Although SR Instruments no longer sold Marine Instruments, they still offer repair and parts service for the old SR Marine Instruments. I sent my knotmeter and transducer to them and when returned, it was like getting a new knotmeter. My boat is also in the water and was able to accomplish the replacement waterborne. My knotmeter transducer is in lower right of the photo. (Fishfinder install is on my website w/more photos)

Joe,

Since you also have the SR Mariner knotmeter, if you want to remove the transducer while waterborne, you have to unthread the twist on cap, quickly remove the transducer and then quickly install the dummy plug retightening the twist cap. It is a little scary taking off the twist cap as water starts to rush in until you install the dummy plug. Depending on how efficient you are, you will take on approximately 1/2 gallon to perhaps 1-2 gallons of water which will find it's way to the bilge. I surrounded the hull fitting with towels and that helped minimize the clean up. It is actually not a big deal to remove and re-install the twist cap. But you have to look on board your boat for where the previous owner stored the dummy plug. If you do not have one, go to the SR Instrunebts website and you can order one.
