My last cruise and sailing was ten years ago. Several issues caused the furlough and my boat set aside the house waiting for opportunity to resume. About five years ago, the boat got a wash and during it I became starkly aware of a problem... while on the coach roof my balance was not good.
Shortly after the last cruise in 2003, some foot neuropathy(sp) began to plague me and after the experience of washing the boat, I was concerned and had doubts about cruising again and even reluctantly considered selling.
The good news... 18 months after losing 50lbs and a revamped diet, balance has improved greatly as confirmed yesterday by washing the boat and having no issues on the coach roof.
The plan is to recommission the boat this winter in prep for a 2014 summer cruise.

How'd you drop the 50? (I could use to lose 20+...)
Dave, yes, the plan is for a local outing or so and maybe a haul to the gulf in early spring to shake every thing down.
The weight loss from 238 to 188 took six months and has been sustained for a year. Not anything new about how, low carb diet, reasonable portions and regular exercise.
Half the credit goes to my wife for her food prep efforts and the other half to self determination.

Hey Frank... thanks for the best wishes... nice to see your familiar name among those who have provided leadership and support to the 25 foot group.
Congratulations! Glad you'll be back on your boat and on the forum. I've missed your tech tips and stories about your travels. I too should take a page from your book - 50# would put me back into fighting shape!

Bruce... I'm looking forward to cruising again. I love flying RC planes and go back forty years with the local flying group, but cruising has a strong appeal that seems to be hankering to make more memories. There is now time for both.
Arlyn, Welcome back to the watery world. You are one of the gems on this forum so all of us are lucky you're back.
Like you, I've had similar issues that have kept me on and off the boat for the last couple of years. I'm down 30# now and ready to get under way again. Of course, I don't have to wait for spring to do some short trips.
I, too, am glad you're back. I missed this summer due to my knee replacement. Therapy included balance exercises. I can do all of them except standing on one leg with my knee slightly flexed and my eyes closed for 30 seconds three times with my other leg in different positions. I'm not sure that I could have done that before, so I think I'm ready for my winter season. One of the upsides is that therapy has gotten me into an exercise regimen that includes weights and walking 5 miles a day and I've lost about 20 pounds. What a change - walking or flexing my knee hasn't been pain free for 40 years.
