I sail on Carlyle Lake, IL. It is an Army Corp of Engineers lake. Thanks to the shut down, they have closed all boat ramps with the exception of the couple that are within the adjoining state park.
These boat ramps do not require any manpower to operate, yet they are closed. Makes a lot of sense to me.
There are few events that are not manipulated for "effect" by someone, the shutdown has been a great example of that. Our lake is Army Corps, State Parks and Rec, and Wichita City water District and has the corners of three counties intersect in the middle of the water. We are way to complicated to shut down. I suppose the Bald Eagle Sanctuary at the North end of the lake might be shut down but I don't think the Birds give a crap... oh wait...

Maybe I am just more gullible than the rest of you, but I have to think that when government shuts down because the money has stopped, things like parks and national monuments need to shut down also. You might not see employees at work all the time, but I have a feeling that there are safety inspections, trash cleanup, infrastructure repairs, other people on call for emergency response, etc., and that the furlough of these people means that safety can't be fully assured with people present in these areas.
I have a real problem with the tea party people who pressed for this shutdown, and then caravaned down I-95 last weekend to DC to converge on the very national parks that were supposed to be shut down. If you want the government to shut down, you should accept the full consequences, and not wreak havoc for the unfortunate federal employees who are just trying to make it through this situation.
My two cents...When you have something that is broken and doesn't work any more you replace it....All of it. This is Gov. gone horribly wrong. How about we round them all up and take them sailing for a day. Maybe it would clear their heads.
[soapbox] I think we should ban politicians from being aired on Radio or TV during the shut down, if they don't get face time then they would get things going really quickly. And perhaps we could all enjoy the National Parks that we pay for. [/soapbox]
And think of the embarrassment of those us from John Boehner's home state. NBC News and Esquire commissioned a poll and were surprised to find that 51% of Americans were centrist. A little right,a little left, and supporting a few things from each party. Would anyone outside of Washington be surprised? And that is as close to political as I'll get.

Note how the dysfunction is worst in the House. I actually feel sorry for Boehner, because the situation is more than any one man can control. Although most Americans are centrist, and pretty evenly divided, decades of gerrymandering of Congressional districts have created "safe" districts for both sides that encourage representatives to stray far to the left or right. Districts are drawn to be strongly D or R, and the representatives just represent their district. Any action to compromise gets met with a primary challenge. It's a bipartisan conspiracy on the part of both Republicans and Democrats, because it protects the incumbents against challengers.
Note that things aren't quite as bad in the Senate. Two reasons - they only have to face re-election every 6 years, and you can't gerrymander state boundaries.
I predict that the stock market will go down by at least 1000 points tomorrow. If they avert a default, it will rebound Thurday. If they don't, it will go down several thousand more on Friday, and it's anybody's guess what will happen next. The govt let Bear Sterns and Lehman Brothers fail in 2008 because they didn't think it would be a big deal. WRONG. A default of US Treasuries will make that look like a blip.

I have a slightly different view on Boehner, but it's not appropriate here.
Let's get those launching ramps opened so we can keep getting those Youtube videos!
Gerrymandering is the result of an era when ethnic groups needed representation. We need to move past that now that gerrymandering IS the problem. Nuts on either side of the aisle have no fear of being replaced on election day. We broke our system, we need to fix it and only the Senate has the standing to bring it to the SCOTUS to be fixed.
