The family is asking me for Christmas gift ideas, and if you're anything like me, I can usually only come up with a couple ideas to give them. I was reading the Friday Night Fright thread and David's recommendation for the EagleTac flashlight made me think that a thread that could be helpful for a lot of us might be ideas for sailing/boating related gifts.
So with the upcoming holiday season, what "stocking stuffer" ideas are you going to give your family? I've definitely got that EagleTac flashlight on my list, plus a couple of 18" ball fenders (not stocking stuffers by any means). I'd like to include a CWP and a firearm after reading that thread, but I don't think that'll go over very well at home.
Last year my wife got me the Raymarine S100 wireless autopilot remote for Christmas. I was reluctant to ask for it because it seemed frivolous, but couldn't think of anything better for her to get me. It has turned out to be more useful than I expected since it allows me to steer from under cover when it's raining. On another occasion we had to motor for about 10 hours (no wind) and the constant drone of the outboard was becoming unbearable, so we were able to steer from the bow of the boat where it was much quieter.
It's not for everyone, and it's pricey, but something to consider.
My wife and kids usually ask me what I need, and and if there is nothing on my list, they get me a West Marine gift card and a new sailing calendar for work. This year though, I'm asking Santa for a new pair of sailing gloves as mine are absolutely shredded (get a new pair every other year) and a new mainsail cover. My birthday is in February and that is when I get my bottom paint. Although I could save $5.00 for a can of VC if I waited until the spring sales events, the family enjoys getting me boat related stuff. When I bought my autopilot, I told the family it counted for both my birthday and Father's Day that year.
Learning that NOAA plans on phasing out paper charts, I am asking for duplicate charts this year. I'll just put them away in my big flat chart drawer for 10 years until my current charts fall apart. I might see about getting them laminated, but that will probably cost more than the cost of the charts!

Don't overreact - there will still be print-on-demand charts available. This is something that the private sector can do much better than the government. Let NOAA focus on the content (in digital form) and let the thousands of independent print shops do the printing for those who still want it.
As for me, I use the BookletCharts as my paper backup. But I don't go offshore, so I don't need large format.

"Hmmmm... What do you suppose this is?" (Rip-crinkle-rip) "Oh WOW!"
I am one of those Fathers who is no fun at all. I buy whatever I need when I need it and there is never anything left for my family to buy me. As a result I rarely get any presents from anyone. I also help my kids as much as I can when they need it and so I rarely give gifts either, when you just paid a kids house or car payment, etc it is hard to have any money left for presents. If it were not for my two grandsons 4 & 6 I am not sure we would have Christmas. I am a generous friend and parent and the older I get the less I like "command performance" gift giving.
I'm going to say something truly out of the norm for me... I have what I need... and way too much of what I want. Sure I could "want" for tons of other stuff... but honestly I've had an awful lot more fun than I'd dare to admit. My Christmas list will likely have NOTHING on it... gift certs are good, but honestly nothing is good as well.
My wife and I spend a LOT on our hobbies. I'll keep myself entertained over the winter months working on the boat improving it as best my not so handy hands can accomplish... in spring I'll be chomping at the bit (a horse metaphor from a horseman) to put back in. I am almost to the point I've done what I want to with this boat, and I need to decide if it's time to upgrade my boat, or upgrade the waters I sail.. both involve a huge sacrifice in money/time to make the change. That alone might keep me in this boat for a few more years.
Frank - I agree wholeheartedly with you. I'm santa claus to my family all year and so when its time to "celebrate" a vestigial pagan ritual, makes me scratch my head. Oh, yes, and even though charts change over time, the rocks don't. The sand does however...
I keep putting stuff I would like on my Christmas list but the Admiral will not buy anything that is for one of my toys-that includes the sailboat. She says you will find a way to get it yourself, and I usually do. I am contemplating a new main sail but not sure what I would want or should get. I may have to purchase my own Christmas gift.

That's a nice shot.. love that shot.. Harder to shoot than most people think. One of my friends buzzed me on the boat in his super cub.... and I've had a Stearman dive bomb me and that was a Hoot!
