Came across these 44' sailboats at the GSA auction site. Seems like amazing boats that the Navy is dumping. There are 3 for sale ranging from 15-20K.

click on boats for all their listings.

Here is the Navy's site about the boat:

There is a reserve price on them, and none of them have reached it yet. Still, interesting to see what they will sell for.

Those boats have been used hard (and raced aggressively). I know people who've raced against them in the Newport-Bermuda and elsewhere. I'd want a very thorough survey, and a substantial post-purchase budget.

That's ironic... I'd wager that most racers (including the navy) might be "harder" on their boats than cruisers, but also way more attentive to maintenance as well, otherwise they'd not be competitive.

My first choice will be a race boat over a cruiser... it's likely the sails at least aren't original then.

But I wouldn't be surprised to find some "fatigue".

The Coast Guard Academy just changed over from their old Luders yawls to the new Morris "Leadership 44s" that were designed for them. Perhaps the Naval Academy felt the need to do a superior upgrade. They wouldn't want to be giving up line honors to the Coasties!

At the end of my dock sits the former USNA Yawl "Intrepid" that now belongs to the local Sea Scout Troop. It looks great from a distance but, up close, it has obviously been ridden hard and put up wet. I'd bet $20-$30k wouldn't bring it up to a condition that would make it live aboard, world cruiser capable let alone comfortable.
