The Stainless filter on our Raw Water strainer for the A/C Pump inlet is now 8 years old and showing signs of breakdown. So I figured I would replace the filter.
I could not get enough leverage on the strainer cap to remove it when it was down in the bilge (aft of the ballast tank) and I could not get the quick disconnects for the hose ends to open. So I had to cut the hose to get the whole assembly out.
Once I had it out I was able to confirm the quick disconnects had seized and trying to unseize them just broke off the tabs. So I needed to replace the whole strainer.
Now, after 8 years on the forum and with an 'owners' frame of mind, I realized that having plastic fittings for the strainer below the water line is not a good practice; concerned that the leverage that might be applied via the hoses could cause fitting failure and below the water line is not a good thing.
Researching online, I found several 1/2" raw water strainers that had metal fittings, but none would fit where I needed it to go.
A visit to BOW confirmed my concerns. The metal strainers required too much bilge height to fit. However, I was able to find a compromise. They had a 3/4" Sherwood strainer that had metal reinforcements around the plastic threaded fittings.
Now I have what seems to be a much better setup. Less components, metal reinforced, replaced the plastic hose connections with metal.
