Please realize that everyone here is one degree of separation from being a Wichita State Shocker fan. I started there in 1967 and have several degrees from there. Our mascot of course comes from a shock of wheat (before the baler was invented). Lots of my school friends worked the harvest and the mascot represents the kind of effort it takes to bring in a harvest. Farming is no place for sissys.
Anyway, as you hear about WSU in the news please let a smile creep onto your face.
I watched win #31--great point guard and GREAT team defense. I'll be pulling for them to make the Final Four, but beating the likes of Florida could be tough. But you never know...
Now how 'bout those Uconn women?? Best coaching job I've seen in any sport! I think only one team in the country has gotten within 15, #2 couldn't do that, and most get doubled or tripled up. They don't have the greatest players--they have the best team. (They go for 31-0 against #3 tonight--hope I'm right!)
The Uconn men are having an off-year, so we probably won't have both championships in CT this year...
Since the Shockers went to the final four last year only to lose to the eventual national champion, and have not lost a game since, I would think they should receive the #1 seed but given the bias the sports press has to their "favorites" it probably won't happen. My San Diego State Aztecs are 25-3 and beat Kansas in Lawrence yet Kansas is 22-7 and ranked two spots above the Aztecs. Repuutation is everything in the world of college sports.
Frank, my one degree of separation lies in the fact that I was born in the state just above you which is actually a lot of separation. However, I can appreciate WSU since we're not talking football.
Joe, what you say about our Aztecs is true for any SD sports team. If SDSU wins the National Championship, all we'll hear about is how tragic it was that (insert school name here) lost to such an unknown team.
I am not a Sportsy person so am ignorant of lots of manly things. It wasn't until last year I learned that the Yukon I would hear about was actually UConn. Do I have that right?
I went to school in Ohio and hear ya loud and clear about farming being no place for sissies. While i love our Huskies, I love even more when less recognized schools kick butt! Hope the Shockers go all the way!
To be completely honest, I don't especially "love" the UConn men's team (Huskies)--their graduation rate has been atrocious for a number of years (not because of the NBA), their crime rate has been significant, and their results have... well, that no longer matters in my book, given the rest.
The UConn women (also "Huskies"), on the other hand, are people to be proud of in every respect, and their coach, Geno Auriemma, has built a remarkable series of teams with 100% graduation rates. The women don't slam it, but they play team basketball and 40 minutes of tenacious defense better than their male Husky counterparts. I'll be following the Husky women, the Shockers, and the Blue Devils through the NCAAs! (I consider "Coach K" to be the role model on the men's side of college basketball.)
It would make me feel better if Kentucky won, especially since it was Louisville that beat us last year, but Florida seems to be a lot like us so I hope it works out for them. UConn seems to be a true Phoenix.
OK, my turn!! Who could've guessed the Huskies in the Final Four?! (I'm talking about the men, now.) Could this the second time both the UConn men and women win it all (when the first time in 2004 was the first in history)?? Probably not...........
But what state is the Capital of Basketball?? Anybody???
