My last sail of the season back in mid December, I had to break ice to get out of the harbor. My first sail of this season, I had to break ice to get out of the harbor. I've been thinking of adding some steel plating to the bow to avoid damage.
Most of the groups that I race with on the Chesapeake don't allow spinnakers in frostbite races. In fact, I think the rule is that no crew are permitted outside the cockpit during races. The objective is to ensure, as much as possible, that nobody will go overboard into the icy winter water. Sounds like a good rule.
