Looking on Google Earth, the "Public Launch Area" looks like a road of sorts leading to a beach of sorts, ending maybe 100' from the water, with cars scattered about. A 20' tide range will make things "interesting." Maybe that's how you do it--park the trailer on the beach and wait for "lift off"--then retrieve the trailer when the tide goes back down.

Dave: Interesting, no wonder they were so vague about what they could launch. I would hope that with my 15' extensions coupled with 20' of chain that I could get her launched. Thats one hell of a long trip to find out if I am wrong!

Hah! Pretty much as I suspected... Jim, best of luck! And once you're in, if you anchor, make sure to allow for those tides and currents.

Dave & Paul: Thats quite a system they have down there! Sit and wait for the tide lift off seems to actually be possible with 20' variances. After launching you could be back on the beach again if your not careful! As slow as these projects are going I may not ever get to find out if I can launch down there. San Carlos/Guymas is supposed to have a deep launch but thats hundreds of miles furthur down than Rocky Point. Thanks, Chief

I strongly suspect you'll find diminishing tide ranges as you go south in the Sea of Cortez, probably due to the same effect as we have in Long Island Sound: the tide enters the long, closed area and forms a harmonic wave that peaks at the end and then reverses. The distance affects the harmonic characteristic. In Long Island Sound, some of the peak squirts out through Hell Gate (appropriately named) in NYC, into the East River and New York Harbor, but most of it reverses and goes back out through The Race (appropriately named) where I live. Tide ranges here are 2.5 - 3', while in The Bronx, it's 6.5 - 9', which is enough to be a pain for anchoring and tying up to fixed docks and pilings. I can hardly imagine 20'!

So my advice would be, "Go south, young man!"
