I feel REALLY fortunate to be able to sail Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Just had to share. We had 14-16mph winds Saturday, gusts to 30! Whitecaps and favorable winds, reach/broad reach down the lake, and close reach back, a 2 tack kind of day.. 6 hour sail.
Sunday winds slowed a bit... 7-10mph gusts to 15, couple dead spots on the lake, and more chop (as it was hotter)... but still good sailing! 5 hour sail.
Monday (Memorial Day), winds were decent and steady! 15mph steady in the morning, couple +10 gusts, some stronger spots were 20ish with whitecaps. Got to take a NEWBIE 20yo sailing with me.. Friends son, as crew. He was just beyond stoked to be sailing. He thought he was in for a "relaxing sail," my friend owns a B25 (a helluva boat to), and him and I raced each other down the lake to the dam and back. I smoked him reach/broad reach down... and we exceeded 6 knots the whole way, surfing and the like. Just a bang up time. Then going back we wore our arms out grinding and trimming going back uphill back (where the B25 gave us a horizon job)... That boat is a beast uphill! Just a great sail though. I closed the gap when we got into the spotty shifty stuff, but it wasn't enough. I'll admit that I got to BSing with crew, and wasn't quite focused on sailing... also he was enjoying walking around on deck and trying to stay standing at 15-25 degrees of heel!
Just a fantastic sail weekend. Had to share. We don't get winds like that often, one must take advantage of it.
I MUST admit though, I've had probably 15 sails already this season, and none have been horrible winds.
I know you will say "without pictures it didn't happen," I agree, except that I busted the screen on my cellphone (primary picture taking device)... on Saturday.
We had the pleasure of spending 5 glorious days last week at Lake Martin, AL (2 hrs south of Birmingham) at my sister-in-law's lake house. Pontoon boat, no sailboat, but the weather could not have been better. Nice relaxing stay. considering taking the C22 next trip.
Don't worry John you weren't the only one out, we had four sailboats out for a weekend trip. 11 hour motor sail to Ft Pierce Friday, Friday night on the hook, Saturday at the Ft Pierce Marina allowing the girls to check out the farmer's market, the night at the Marina (the girls also appreciated the electric and A/C), and then a 10 hour motor sail home on Sunday. Great weather and wind from the right direction on Sunday.
