Looking for a nice & economical marina in the New London, Groton or Niantic area for an extended exploratory visit on the Thames River and Fishers Island. Anybody with experience in the area? I plan to sail up on the outgoing tide in a day and spend few nights. My wife plans to drive up after work on Friday to spend the weekend. Lots to see there with the USCG academy, Submarine Museum, lighthouse tours and casinos & nightlife. While there are marinas galore up in Mystic and Noank, that's just a little farther than I'd like to travel once on site. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

I can't really make a recommendation, but the one marina I'm aware of in New London Harbor is Burr's, just south of Fort Trumbull. http://www.burrsmarina.com/

Niantic isn't very close to anything you're interested in. Groton has Pine Island Marina at the end of the airport runway--not very accessible to things except by car.

When are you thinking about?

In a week or two, before the 4th of July. When I check the marinas in NL, I get (in no particular order):
(1) Burr's
(2) AW
(3) Palmer's (in Groton Long Point)
(4) Thamesport
(5) Crocker's
I can do a bit of scouting via Google Earth.
The other problem with Pine Island is the Groton Airport. I've hiked Bluff Point State Park enough to know it's a very noisy place with takeoffs and landings... So sleeping in could be a problem past 0600!
