So I had the top end of the Yamaha rebuilt last year (timing belt jumped a notch and bent the valves) by an outboard shop near the lake. When I got the motor back the valves were clicking way louder than before. So back it went (all 113 lbs) for a second time. Got the motor back with little improvement. Also told the mechanic that I thought the propeller shaft seal had a slow leak "no, a little leak is normal - don't worry about it!" Went to launch the boat this season and there was a small puddle of oil under propeller shaft.
Fearing the clicking valves were not doing the motor any good, I found a factory trained Yamaha dealer an hour north of the lake. Got the motor back and it now purrs like a kitten and the valves are silent - just like when the motor was new!
Yup... A 4-stroke outboard is just not the same as a chainsaw motor. Look for a manufacturer-certified mechanic. Better yet, a dealer's shop. Yamaha isn't Honda isn't Tohatsu. (Mercury is... well, a little this and a little that.)
Those good ole 2-strokes--no valves, no timing belts, not much of anything... except oil smoke and noise.
