Yesterday we were out sailing on a beautiful day when we sailed up what at first we thought was a safety check. Coast Guard, Police etc. all with lights flashing. This was all going on just outside my harbor in LI Sound. As we got closer it was evident that this was no safety check but instead two sunk sailboats! The two boats were within 50 feet of each other with only the top of the masts showing. I'm guessing that they collided but I'm not sure because I can't seem to find out any info, No news reports that I can find. Any guesses?
One boat being towed still under water
The other sitting on the bottom with just the top of the mast showing behind one of the rescue boats
Not in a mooring field. This happened just outside of Hempstead Harbor on the Nassau/LI side of the Sound. The boat on the bottom is sitting in @45ft of water. Lots of east/west boat traffic on a Sunday(Vacationers, weekenders) intersecting with people like me (day sailing) that are sailing north/south due the easterly winds yesterday.
funny how it is sitting on the bottom upright like that, must have a wing keel, or twin bilge keels or something?
There could still be enough air in the cabin trunk to keep her upright. Two down--have to suspect a T-bone where the boat that was hit went down and the "hitter" (impact on the bow) stayed up. Hope everyone's OK, but two skippers are going to be taken over the coals.
Ouch... that'll just BUFF out... thanks for the nightmares... OH wait, I don't have a boat... I'm good.
Still can't believe you sold it.
The new owner sounds like he's well on his way. He solo launched it, and raised the mast, and took his first sail in 15kt winds... I think he'll fit in nicely around here.... can't wait until he bloodys some noses with the boat around the cans. It's a highly underestimated boat.
But I think I have a "short term" solution to my boatless problem will keep everyone updated.
Back on topic - So did we get an answer to what actually happened? Did they float the boats again? What kind of damage caused 2 to sink?
They took the one being towed over to the beach in the photo background and ran it aground. I guess so they could put pumps into it and de-water and patch it. I don't know where they took it from there but it was gone on Monday. The other boat on the bottom I haven't found out anything about. They were still guarding it when we went home. Harbor patrol parks in my Marina so I will ask them next time they are there.
Odds are good that the collision happened at night and the one being towed was under power. Odds also good that one or both of the the skippers were impaired. Mast on the sunk boat looks pretty big! Sad to see!
No, Not at night but at around 11am. Thats when we heard all the sirens from the CG/Police rushing to the accident. At that time we were about a mile away and could only see a powerboat who was probably close and had gone to their rescue. The CG pulled up to the powerboat and that is why we thought it was a vessel check going on.There was a big 24hr Long Island Bluefish tournament going on so I thought that the CG/Police were taking advantage and checking all the fishing boats for intoxication We couldn't see the sailboats, I guess they had already sunk. We kept sailing and on every pass we were getting closer. Each pass took about 1hr and eventually we were close enough to see the masts and the tow boats.
i love it when the cop tells him to relax it's not an emergency. The incident the cop was headed to also was not an emergency. Someone jumped off a tourboat and was already recovered. Also if I had left that oil sheen on the water, I'm sure the cop would treat it as an emergency.
Scott, did you check with the local newspapers, TV news or cable news (NY1 or News12) stations? We have a local newsie with a website around Stratford and I check that for odd stories like this one. That's how I found out the winner of the Bluefish Tournament was from the Bronx and bagged a 17 pounder! As well, you can search Twitter for keywords like "sailboat collision", "Hempstead Harbor", "boat sunk", etc and look at the dateline. Best to do that the day of the incident tho. That's how I learned more about a tragic sinking last year on Fishers Island. Heard the Coasties on Ch 16 live, then checked twitter search for posts.
Yea Bruce, Tried the internet searches,News 12 etc. Even went to the Nassau County Marine web site. Nothing, Nada Zip. Like it didn't happen. The Harbor patrol guys who I see all of the time seem to have disappeared this week. We went out on Monday and today(Love this retirement stuff) and haven't seen them. Now its a mission!

You know?, it coulda been a couple of political bigwigs misbehavin' and playing hooky. Somehow "it never happened", "nothing to see here", "keep moving", "never you mind" may be the definitive answer.
My son in-law is a Suffolk County cop so when I was telling him about it he said that probably nobody was hurt making it just an accident. Not very newsworthy. On the same day there was a powerboat in trouble on the south shore, A few miles out in the Atlantic that needed to be rescued so maybe that took president. Sailboats just don't get any respect!

You'll see 2 or 3 if you accidently go out 1 life jacket short!
