Our daughter Christine is home for a few days on leave from the Army in NC so we went for a sail with her brother John on "Chariots of Fire". John and Christine bought the boat in January of 2012 and have done much work restoring it.
On a blustery Tuesday December 23rd we set sail from Bremerton (Wa) Yacht Club headed for the Brownsville Deli about 10 miles away. This gave us the chance to use all the systems installed since that January of 2012, especially the most recent electronic additions.
Suffice it to say that the TP 10 (Navico)purchased at a local consignment shop worked great in 20+ knots and a 2+'following sea. The Hummingbird depth sounder and Lowrance Chartplotter also worked great. The stereo and Christmas music was a plus. The VHF radio with a remote microphone donated from my boat when I upgraded to a Standard Horizon AIS radio also worked well with the 8' whip antenna we installed. And the battery charging kit installed in the motor last Saturday and wired to the battery on Monday made sure we didn't drain the battery.
The hot lunch at the Brownsville deli was a welcome respite on the blustery day.
Using the currents both ways we hit 7.1 kts motor sailing with the 135 roller furler jib en route to Brownsville. We rarely dropped below 6 kts. Retracing our route to Bremerton we managed to average about 5.5 kts in sometimes really heavy rain and a dying wind. The dodger was great as was the Force 10 heater in the cabin. I can also personally attest to the heat and comfort of the V-berth in such conditions. Even with the heavy rain and 40+degree temp the cabin was toasty warm.
We look forward to another voyage Saturday.
Merry Christmas to all. Boating is fun and when family and Christmas is added, well, that is just hard to beat.
