So I am thinking about picking up a couple lightly used sails that are from a different type of boat to get me through the next season as I've decided new sails are not in the budget this year. The boat they were used on is a Ranger 23 who's rig dimensions are very close to our Cats.
Rigs: Cat25: SA Fore:152sf I:29' J:10.5' SA Main:118sf P:24.66' E:9.58' Total:270sf Ranger 23: SA Fore:134sf I:27.54' J:9.75' SA Main:110sf P:24' E:9.17' Total:255sf
The sails im looking at are as follows: "Main-North Sails Luffx23'-11"Leachx26'-8" Footx8'-9" Minor stains. 1 chafed spot. No bag."
"Genoa (unidentified %) Tidewater Sails Luffx28'-3" Leachx28'-3" Footx13'-3" Minor stains. No bag."
The condition of them is far better than the rags on my boat and I would be elated if they would get me through 1 season. Keep in mind the price is that it's almost worth the gamble, but it never hurts to check with you guys!
The main thing I see would be an issue is if the Ranger's rig is very flexible or something, but other than that I can't really see why not to give it a shot.
Any words to either dissuade or persuade me? I'm probably going to pull the gun today as I just got a sweet holiday bonus
It looks like they would fit. If the mainsail has slides, you might have to replace them, if they don't fit your track. That isn't a terrible job. If the chafed area needs a patch or a little re-stitching, I have a Sailrite machine and can probably sew one on for you when I get back to the Bay sometime in late March.
Do you have a R/F? The R/F will cut down the luff length you need. The max hoist on my Genoa is 27'8" allowing for the R/F drum and swivel. A hanked on would be longer. You might want to measure yours first.
Pull the trigger... it looks like you have done the proper research.. I agree used sails are fun having done the same with good results. Looking forward to getting new sails one day and love the used ones till then...
All I can say is breath deep and enjoy the moment and try to delay as much as you can ... It's such fun to be in the looking stage!!
With the storms we've had there are so many used sails out there right now.
bUT ANYHOO... LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE RUN THE NUMBERS CORRECTLY. I'll review them again. You didn't mention actual prices but I can imagine.
Also.. In my case the story went.. so I bought used sails and then took mine to my local Sailmaker and got him to go over them for me and then promised him I would buy my new sails from him...
Crazy guy but a hoot so see someone sewing sails for a living..
Now.. Did Steve say he would sew on some slugs????
No roller furler on David buoy. A convient downhaul and lines aft work for me. The jib looks to be the perfect compromise between my 110 and 150+. Also, just got an amazing bonus at work today and ordered $1000 of parts and rigging. Sails and a stereo are the last piece of the puzzle!! Then what do I do?? Sail I guess? Lol
