If you make something like that, make sure the mast isn't supported by small, flat areas at the edges of the slot, but rather by the by areas closer to the sides of the extrusion. Some small pieces of carpet, for example, might suffice. The curved bottom shown in the CD carrier probably keeps the support areas away from the slot.
I have a similar homemade cradle with broom handle hangars to stabilize the 2x4 on the pulpit, but I only use it for boatyard storage. I would not trust it for trailering or other stressful motions. OJ's looks much more sturdy than mine. However, if you're going to trailer a lot, you might consider spending money on the fiberglass one. For $110 you have peace of mind for an item that would cause catastrophic damage should it fail.
