The Delaware River looks like a scene from another planet. With 6-7' tidal swing and 2 knot current, the ice does not freeze flat - it's a bunch of mini-icebergs sticking out of the water. I'll try to get a picture of it this weekend.

One of our tidal rivers, the Housatonic, is still open in many spots, although there are some ice floes here and there. Because this is some of the only open fresh or brackish water in the area, the sea birds, geese, ducks and mergansers show up in droves. BUT, the species that spooks them all are two pair of bald eagles who've been spotted between Long Island Sound and the Sikorsky Bridge on the Merritt parkway, about 6 miles upriver from the Sound. While there are only a handful of nesting pairs of bald eagles in Connecticut, the open waters of the Hous and the CT river acts as a focus point every February and March, until Ice-Out takes place on the lakes and rivers across the state. My wife and I saw a pair engaged in a dance - first we saw two HUGE birds swoop down nearby, then they ascended quite high - maybe 500 or more feet. Then they embraced and began to plummet but separated and pulled out of the dive well before coming all the way back to earth. Afterward they flew off in another direction. A few days later I saw them a few miles further afield. If I'm lucky I'll try to get a photo, but all I got was a black speck in an azure-blue sky.

OK to add to my other photo of my frozen harbor, this one was taken this morning. This is looking north out of the harbor towards Conn. My Marina is off to the right just out of the shot. L.I Sound is straight out and runs left(NYC) and right (E. Long Island, Conn,Block Isl) And yes it snowed 5in. last night.
