i was going to pull my turning ball mechanism for the keel over the weekend to clean it up, since it doesn't turn all that well. however, i was stymied by the pin which seems to have become one with the upper ball.
any recommendations on how to remove it? i lightly tapped it with a screw driver, but was hesitant to push too hard as it's at the top of the fiberglass tube and it flexes a bit.
if i turn the ball with a flat tip screw driver as i best i can, it seems the ball will inch a tad, but the pin turns with it. i'm guess the whole thing is galled up.
i was contemplating replaced the whole kit with a new one from catalina, but if i can't even get the old one out, i might be stuck.
By the sound of it, your boat has the twin turning ball system sold by Catalina Direct.
On the standard swing, there is only 1 turning ball and that is at the bottom of the tube.
If you do have the twin system, then you should be able to remove it upwards by extracting the pin that is inserted through the Fiberglass tube and the top turning ball.
For the record in case anyone comes across this. Yes I do have the twin turning ball setup.
I did manage to get the pin removed from the upper turning ball and slide the whole assembly out. Here's what i did:
1. A Heavy squirt WD-40/PB Blaster on the ball a few times over a few days
2. Then I used a C-Clamp and a socket to effectively press the pin out of the ball.
I'm not sure if the spray cleaners actually had an effect though. I did try to tap on the pin several times with a hammer to no effect. It was however, a very simple push with the C-Clamp.
Maybe the two choose to react together then very instant i tried to remove the pin with the clamp, or the clamp actually put more pressure on the pin then tapping on it with a hammer I'm not sure.
but it's out and it's in terrible condition. the upper ball isn't too bad, but the pin was frozen to the ball. the shaft had gunk all caked on it. and the lower ball was completely hosed, frozen solid to the shaft and nearly rusted away.
