Greetings all, I need to make a gustimate of how much line to purchase for my CDI furler. It's going to deploy a 135 jib and I plan on running the line back to the cockpit. It calls for 1/4 double braid - any words of wisdom ? or guess of how much line I'll need? Thanks Jan
This is a case where it is better to have 15' extra than 1' short...when we replaced our furling line some years ago, I bought plenty extra and use it for the lazy jacks and traveler control lines and other misc applications.
Having said that, you'll need at least the length of the jib's foot, plus 25', plus extra for the initial wraps on the drum, and throw in some more for the cockpit dead-end...hope this helps.
I had the same question a few weeks ago and found an old post saying 40-44 feet back to the cockpit. I have my furler cleat next to the headsail winch and cleat so I figured 50' of 1/4" would be safe.
Thanks for the info, I really don't mind having a little extra so 50' it is then. I too plan on having the furler cleat not far from the headsail winch. Thanks again Jan
I ran the line back on the starboard side. Ran the line through eyes attached to the outside of the stanchions. Put the cleat on the starboard side just in front of the rear cockpit rail.
You won't be pulling that hard on it, so 1/4" handles fine. It's more important that the drum has the capacity--you don't want to go too large.
