Our WM boat hook no longer locks in place when twisted. It telescopes just fine, but won't 'catch' when twisted (slowly or quickly). Is it time for a new one, or is there a maintenance thing I can do?
Thanks,

Jerry

Not sure if it uses the same feature as our Pool Pole, that has a disc about 1/4" screwed to the end of the inside pole slightly off center, so rotating the inside pole jambs the two.

Can you pull it apart completely without destroying it?

Mine does the same thing. I sprayed it with silicone and WD-40. Seems to have made it worse.

Take it to WM. You might get a new one.

So you thought lubing it would help?

I believe it operates off the same mechanics as the whisker poles. They make rebuild kits for them that include new cams.

Long story, but you asked
I've had at least a dozen of these dagnab boat poles. Sooner or later salt water gets in them while retrieving an item or something in the water. After a little while they start getting crusty inside: the salt corrodes the aluminum, so this time I rinsed it out with the hose and thought I'd better try and protect the parts inside with some silicone spray. It has helped in the past, given me another season perhaps.
This time my preventative maintenance backfired.
I can still use it as it catches sometimes but over time the oil evaporates and the propellant gets sticky so that should make it better. Or I can just bring it back to the store for a swap.
Maybe some folks can take theirs apart to replace cams but I've never been able to without ruining the pole. Good luck!
