I'm looking for a smart way to store and pour my drinking water onboard.
I don't feel comfortable drinking the water out of my boat's fresh water tank. I was using a standard 5 gallon water jug with a hand pump, but the pump is only effective when the jug is mostly full. The 5 gallon jug was easy to store - I bungeed it at the head of the main cabin on the starboard side.
Any suggestions? Are there better quality hand pumps to check out? Any other solution that stores nicely while under sail and is still convenient to access?

I use two one gallon jugs of store bought water and they hold each other in on the floor to the left of the companionway ladder as you face it aft. Usually buying one jug each time I go to the boat. they've never spilled yet.

We removed the stove years ago and have made good use of the additional counter space. I installed a teak board across the opening and we keep provisions there, including a 2 gallon jug w/ a spigot. Works great, and we buy bottled water by the 6 gallon case from Costco.
We froze water in half-gallon milk/juice jugs, used them like ice in the cooler, and as mentioned, drank from them as they melted. We'd take one out now and then to accelerate the melting. Of course, this strategy is only good for a few days out.

Add a cleanout port to your fresh water tank, remove it, take it home, and scrub it. Then you can use that as your water. I also replaced the water hoses. The water system on a Catalina 25 is simple and easy to make safe for drinking water.
I still usually carry 3 10 liter bladders (MSR makes the best ones) of water that I pour into my fresh water tank if it is empty. That way I have some spare. On my Catalina 25 I carried those in the flat storage area that is under the quarterberth.

I finally settled on a pair of 2.5 gallon HDPE spring water bottle with a spigot. One stays in the galley and the spare in the quarterberth. When we finish one I fill it at home and return it before we finish the backup.
