Hi everyone! I just wanted to share a recent modification I made on my baby. I have always been unimpressed by the white companion way cover which came with my boat. I don't want to seem ungrateful for the less labor intensive aspect of the material, but it just seemed aesthetically uninspiring. So, I recently took the cover to a glass supplier and had them cut a new cover using a tinted transparent acrylic material. When it was finished, I entered the cabin and closed up the companion way with the new cover. It was awesome! It's like being able to view the outside of your boat while inside the cabin. It makes the cabin so much brighter. It will be outstanding for those rainy days...as a matter of fact, now I'm going to look forward to a few. If you haven't made this modification, I highly recommend it. Cost for me was about $125.00 including tax. Looks great from the outside too. Go for it and enjoy!
Sounds like a great idea, I saw this on another boat some time ago, and also thought about doing it. The newer C250's have a vent in the companionway hatch- did you have this put in also? Do you have any pics?
Do you happen to have the dimensions of the hatch? My boat is at the dock - I could easily cut a crude plywood hatch to replace the real one while I have a plexiglass one made, I would also need the thickness. Thanks,
Sorry, I don't have the deminsions. I had to give them the hatch cover that came with the boat as a pattern. It only took them a week to complete. What I did was to cover the companion way first with the snap-on hatch cover made from the sail cover cloth. I then covered that with the pop-top enclosure which also snaps down (both these items came with my boat.) Just for safe measure I tied down a tarp over it all. The boat remained dry, even in the Washington rain. Let me know how yours turns out and how you like it.
we did the same thing on our previous boat. (19 ft west wight potter) i just took the old plywood hatch which had hinges that it allowed it to fold in half to a local glass company. they said that they had never made one before but would try. they used the hardware from the origional hatch and made it out of tinted lexan. what a beautiful job, even they were impressed. i sent several friends from the marina to them and they all loved the look too. it cost about $100.00, took 2 days and made all the difference in the world. i had not thought of doing that to this boat, but now that you mention it...
That's what I will do, use the accessory covers - fabric to hide the fact that my main hatch will be missing. I need this as a template for the two new hatches I am making. One of smoked lexan, and the other for a holder for my new A/C unit - remote controlled!!!!! (what a joke- but hey - most of the other guys have or wished they had A/C)up here on Texoma.
