i have an 8hp elec/start now. i sail in the chesapeake, with a strong current, what would be the minimum HP you would suggest?

I wouldn't go lower than an 8hp and no higher than a 9.9hp. I have read in this forum of people using 6's, but, to me, this seems a little underpowered(unless you just use it as a kicker on a small, calm lake).

The C25 manual states,

<b>RECOMMENDED OUTBOARD ENGINE</b>

<i>"An outboard engine of 7.5 to 10 horsepower should be adequate to propel the Catalina 25 at hull speed under usual conditions.

A larger engine will not increase hull speed and may add additional unnecessary weight in the stern.

Long shaft engines are preferable, however, standard length shaft engines should be adequate for most conditions."</i>


I've used my 8hp in currents, wind, waves, weather, and it has performed well and if I ever had to replace it, I would most likely get another 8hp.

Catalina should eliminate the above statement from their manual. Very few C-25 owners would agree with it. You really need a long shaft motor. It doesn't take much of a chop to make a standard shaft motor cavitate.

Make that extra-long (25" and above) or whatever it takes to get the anticavitation plate 4-5" below the static waterline.

Steven,
I have a Honda 8 long shaft and I sail on Lake Erie. I have had problems with cavitation in the chop we frequently get on the Lake. My next motor will be the extra long shaft even though the motor weighs significantly more. Having the prop loose its grip while the boat pitches is no fun. However, once moving at a few knots, the stern seems to settle down more and there is little problem. The motor seems to have enough H.P. to move the boat at or near hull speed.
