Ok, I have horrible spelling. A handicap that's been reinforced by automatic spell check in everything I do- except this forum. Is there a spell check on this system?

No, there isn't, but there are a couple of things you can do.

First, you could compose your forum message in Microsoft Word and, after doing a spellcheck, simply copy and paste it into the message box on the forum.

Or, after composing your forum message, copy and paste it in Word to spellcheck it. If the spellcheck finds any errors, then go back and correct them in the forum message box.

Hi Doug,

Yep ... we can't argue with you on this one ... your spelling is atrowshious! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Since my spelling isn't too hot either, I check the spelling on all my posts. Similar to Don's suggestion, I copy and paste my message into my email template ... I use the email spell checker to show me my screw ups.

One Other Idea:
spell things incorrectly on purpose, then they won't no![homonymatic pun intended], because this forum is about learning about our boats and the people who own them not about spelling words right. I don't think any less of you because you make a typo - Now tell me your selling the sailboat and outfitting your family with PWC's, that's another story.

IMHO typos (as in onlt instead of only) are forgiveable and can be picked up by spell check. Homophone errors make me grind my teeth! "Heal" instead of "heel", "your" instead of "you're" (for "you are")etc, etc. Sorry about that...
OK, so I'm a pedant...but we had good spelling drilled into us in the early grades. Now my son, who is a restaurant manager, tells me that half the high school kids who come looking for jobs can't even fill out the application form...<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>

So Doug who cares about spelling I'm no good at it either. Big question is when are you going to get the boat out. Ruth and I will be off to Blake Island weekend after next. Hope to see you out soon. Let us know when you heading to Dockton we will meet you.

Installing carpets this weekend, but I can tell it's that time of the year. There's Good Old Boat magazines laying everywhere, outboard parts in the car, bottom paint quotes in my wallet...

I'm in the word business and while bad spelling can be a distraction to reading it certainly doesn't get in the way of picking up a lot of good information on this site.

For those of you who swear by spell checkers, the following will come up with no errors:

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea see
It plainly marques four my review
Miss steaks eye kin not sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong or rite …
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the airer rite
Its rare lee ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

While spelling is certainly not everything, I must confess that a person who CARES enough to edit the printed word has a good deal more credibility with me than one who doesn't. Call me old fashioned, but run on sentences and poor spelling puts me off in the same way that "I seen him do it", and "I done that for years" make me skeptical of those I hear interviewed on TV or radio. I even shop at Albertson's grocery (even though prices may be higher) because their speed line reads, "10 items or FEWER", rather than the incorrect "10 Items or less". How's that for fussy?

While Derek is right on the homophone issue, I still would appreciate the use of spell check, or getting edited by a speller, for those who know that our spelling is suspect. I dislike seeing the language disrespected in the same way I dislike seeing a neglected sailboat!

Your definately rite! We must be careful--there could be children watching.

My technique is somewhat more crude--I post, read what I posted, and then go back and fix it, or at least most of it. (No writer can reliably proofread his or her own work.) I applaud those who go to the effort to run spelling checkers on their posts, but I wouldn't want to dissuade those who aren't in the "word business" from participating. And besides, your not going to find everything with a spelling checker (as this sentence proves).

I, for one, don't think people are being "disrespectful" to the language when they sometimes misspell a word, use the wrong word, or use improper grammar/punctuation. What I find disrespectful is to suggest that those with less than perfect writing skills are not as credible as more accomplished writers.

There are people out there who do not participate in these forums because they believe either their sailing expertise or their writing skills are not good enough for them to be a coherent contributor, I know because I was once one of them. Imagine the intimidation they must feel when they read that some people are put off by run on sentences and poor spelling.

I apologize if I sound a little annoyed, but I have a brother who is mildly dyslexic. He busted his a$$ to overcome it when he was growing up and I admire him more for it.

My point exactly; he CARED enough to try to do better. I admire that, too. I wasn't trying to insult anybody, and I admitted to being fussy about language. However, I am serious when I say that people (and businesses) have more credibility with me when they don't settle for mediocrity. But hey, we don't all have to see it the same way. I certainly was not intending to intimidate anyone.

As for me, I will just continue to do the breast I can under the circumcisions <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Gary: You mean like that? Pick a post you want to respond to, click on the little page icon with the arrow (Reply with Quote), and then type below the /quote "tag" at the bottom of the quoted post. You can also go inside the quote and delete the part that is not pertinent to your response--as I did here.
