Holy crap! Was it a power boat that hit some debris or was it a sail that lost its keel? These guys were remarkably calm for folks who just lost their boat at sea. I was surprised that they didn't try to salvage it when the other boat came. And the USCG rescue swimmer was very cool. Another adventure at sea. Good thing they had their device!

Appears to be a twin outboard center console with a crack right down the center. It's a shame the guy who left Sarasota with his kids a couple of weeks ago didn't have a PLB.

...which is one reason I'm going to get an electronic flare. (Unfortunately, I just replaced my expired flares with more like them.) The electronic is More reliable, runs much longer, has no expiration date, and with the included distress flag is USCG approved to replace all pyrotechnics. I plan to have that and a PLB along with my handheld VHF in my floating ditch bag.

What's the cost of an average PLB? Is it a subscription-based service? Yearly cost? I assume you register your ID with the USCG similar to your SSDI for your VHF radio... Although that's registered via BoatUS if memory serves.
Oops. Look like I answered my own question. This website reports on a few, however I'm pretty sure this is not a totally unbiased report

There is no subscription. You purchase a PLB, register the unit with the CG and that's it. You renew the registration periodically. The only other cost is the cost of replacing the battery, needs to be done every five years. In my case, I must take it to a ACR service center to do that, they don't sell the battery to the public. Cost of the battery is about a third of the cost of the PLB. PLB's can be purchased for as low as about $200.00
I'm using an ACR AquaLink View, cost about $400.00. It has a digital display and you can view GPS coordinates and can send text messages with a subscription.
My battery needs to be replaced next month at a cost of about $150.00.

quote:Davy J -- Thanks for the info: it sounds to be an affordable safety tool for those doing off-shore cruising
Not just for off-shore, you could use one of these hiking in the woods and Search and Rescue would find you more quickly. I think even if you sail a small lake, your chances of rescue in an emergency would be much better.
