I will be headed home to Connecticut later this month for a week. I was wondering if any of the members up that way know of any sailing charter companies? I was looking for maybe a 2 hour day sail. My Dad always loved long island sound as a kid growing up in Milford,so was trying to get him out on the water for a little bit. Thank you
Norwalk and Mystic have the Sound Sailing Center. Not sure of the whole deal, but they've got both ends of the state covered. Is there an AirBnb type thing for boats?

I don't know about them in Mystic (my home), but I'm familiar with them in Norwalk--at Norwalk Cove Marina by Calf Pasture Beach. You can rent an Ensign for day-sailing, with an electric trolling motor to get out and in. You start out inside the Norwalk Islands, and generally will want to follow one of the two channels (east or west) out to the Sound--the area inside the islands is a little tricky.

Dave, I was puzzled by the Mystic references too, it seems they have a location at Mystic Shipyard, 100 Essex St, Mystic, CT. They say they have a few rental boats at this location, however the main phone is at Calf Pasture beach off East Ave in East Norwalk. Call ahead. Another rental location is in Westport at the Longshore Country Club. The club offers courses and rentals, and my kids and I attended there in the early 90's. While it sounds muy exclusivo, it's generally open to the public. Call ahead at Longshore Sailing School (203) 226-4646 There was a sailing school at Captain's Cove in Bridgeport's Black Rock Harbor, but I'm not sure of its current status. It's a really nice place to have lunch or dinner, and very Yar. Nothing in Milford (ah!, my retirement job), New Haven or Branford. A nice place to chill out is Milford downtown. Multiple restaurants, very walkable and plenty of parking.

Bruce: I go by the Mystic Shipyard all the time--never was aware of their boats (some of which carry their name on the mains'ls). And my web search came up empty. Where did you find it (for other than Norwalk)?

Sound Sailing Center does charter/rent boats from Ensigns to a Hanse 32 and Sabre 30. Just be aware that the boats appear to be in rough shape. I have seen over the past few years -- several times -- the Ensigns aground on one of the Norwalk Island shoals etc. So all are spartan at best. But a great sailing venue. I am not sure if Longshore is still chartering but the boats were smaller than Sound Sailing and in better condition.

Dave, I read the fine print and I get their newsletter where they mention it. Hey, did you get over to Sailfest?
Peter, not surprised in the least that their boats have a lot of miles and wear on them. In my few trips to the Norwalk Islands, I never have bottomed out, but I got damn near it a few times. A careful eye on charts and the other one on my depth finder kept me outta trouble.
But I could imagine a novice sailor, one who's cocky and overconfident or one who's never dealt with rocks could find themselves in a heap of trouble in the Norwalk Islands. Follow the red nuns and you should be fine, try and wing it and uh-oh!
Longshore had Widgeon center boarders for sailing classes so many years ago, I'm not sure if they've moved up to smaller J Boats or another class boat.
