Any tips for stepping the mast for the first time? It is currently under a tarp but I need to get the mast up to replace the rubber hatch gasket. Any tips or links would be helpful. Thanks!!!
- if you're doing it without equipment, get a buddy... or two. Two is better. - take it SLOW. If you feel something is going wrong, set the mast back down. - Watch out for your turnbuckles: it is very easy to bend your hardware if something gets kinked
Fairly often right now. Down the road maybe not as often. Its sitting on a trailer in a boat yard. I've seen people make rising and lowering systems. Just not sure how complicated these are to make. I recently bought an outboard motor and want to test it out this weekend.
why not just take the mast off the boat while you do the gasket repairs or test run the engine; 4 pins from the aft lowers and the uppers is all it takes. then you have more time to investigate the mast raising systems. I prefer an A-frame set up; once attached and practiced you can raise and lower your mast without a problems; laying out all the shrouds and the back stay so they don't catch on anything is key.
Do you have a jib furler? This adds a slight complication because the shaft needs rigid support while you’re moving the mast around. I used a 1x3 10 foot board to support the furler and tie it to the mast. If you don’t have a furler it’s a lot simpler.
