Took the mainsail cover off today for the first sail of the season and noticed a few mold or mildew spots, mostly toward the clew end. Nothing terrible; just a lot of specks. Is there an effective way to clean those off without damaging the sail? Thanks!

Chlorine bleach is not a good option for Dacron sails. It tends to weaken the fibers and the stitching of the sail. In the detergent aisle of the supermarket there are some non-chlorine whitening detergents, like Oxi-whatev. This may work. The general rule is start with the most gentle soap then if that’s unsuccessful, slowly increase strength. Another approach is don’t try for perfection all at once. There is no better bleaching agent than direct sunlight and time. Clean it up with mild soap as best you can, then let nature and time do the rest.
