Bought a new off the shelf main sail from Catalina Direct and put it on today. Only to find that it rubs or hang-up on the backstay. Does this sound right or normal? It has four full battens and the top two are the ones it hangs on. It appears to have more roach then the original.
Just a couple thoughts. One of the advantages of having full battens is that the sailmaker can build a more powerful sail with more sail area by making the roach larger than can often be supported by partial battens. On many boats (C25s included) this means that the batten ends may get caught by the backstay......especially in light breezes.
One solution to this is to not hoist the mainsail quite to the very top of the mast. This lowers those battens a little bit and may give the sail swinging room.
We are also looking into purchasing from Catalina Direct. In posts past the overall opinion seemed very favorable. We do not recall any mention of the sail hitting the back stay. Looking for user comments; thanks.......
<font size=2><font face='Comic Sans MS'>You might try checking the height of your boom. Even if the boom is set right if the sail is just catching you could lower the boom <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> (no pun) and get the sail clear of the back stay. If you sail in light air you may benefit from a full roach.

I purchased a new main from Catalina direct a few months ago and had the same issue. I lowered the boom slightly to miss the backstay. I have a standard rig and other than looking like the sail is a little short, it works fine.
Overall, I've been pleased with the quality of the ullman sail from catalina direct.
We had ours made special to include more roach area, although the battens do not run the entire depth of the sail (not all of them anyway). Ours catchs the backstay in light winds, but we knew that when we bought it.
Depending on how much is actually getting caught up on the stay, you may be able to solve it with a few other things before you start lowering things. First, the downhaul on the boom (not the cunningham) should be tight prior hoisting the sail. If not, you may get some unwanted play with the boom rising. Depending on how your sail controls are rigged, you might want to throw on a little cunningham or boom vang prior to the tack.
When ours gets caught we just shake it out. Takes two seconds, but that's a racing mentality....might not be something you want to fuss with when your cruising.
Talk to a CD tech yesterday and he told me that the sail is larger then the original. But it is still with in the CLUB rules? And that I was raising the sail to high? He also mentions something about a Black band around the mast to indicated how high to raise the sail? So I guess I will go try it out this weekend. Thanks for all the input
I'm a bit worried about this. I just bought one of the Ulman sails, and I've got a new mast from Catalina Direct. Unlike the original mast, the new one has a fixed bracket to attach the boom. Lowering the boom, if you pardon the expression, is not an option.
