I took the boat up to parsons marine in Vermillion OH last weekend and had them pull the keel. As I have mentioned in other posts the keel would not extend all the way making the boat point poorly. CLR was too far aft for sailing to windward. I thought for a while that I would switch to the wing keel refit, but that proved to complicated and expensive. The Yard men found something blocking the upper end of the trunk. from the inside everything was sound so they ground enough off the keel, just enough for it to clear the obstruction. Now the keel extends all the way, and I will pick it up tomorow. I'm out about 3 1/2 boat units, which is less than I thought I would have to pay. While doing this we replaced the cable, turning ball, riser pipe, hanger, hanger bolts and turning pin. I'm happy now that I have a refurbished keel that is safe and functional.

John,

Congratulations on your freshly maintained swing keel. Did the yard men at Parsons Marine go into any more detail on what they found blocking the keel? Do you know how much they ground off of where?

I'm about to make some of those mods and wanted to know: what leon asked above, and about the keel bolts. I'm not going to be able to replace the hanger assembly but will be putting new bolts in, did Parsons have any trouble with the bolts seizing or shearing off?

I can't wait to feel that way about mine when I splash, knowing that I've maintained my swinger!

I have done the job before on my C22. The difference 900 pounds makes, is what sent me to the marine services. I just didn't want to try handling that amount of weight. I had the hanger castings machined to the right size before going up to Vermillion. When I did the 22 keel I had no trouble backing out the old bolts. The Kit that comes from catalina direct includes locktite for the bolts.

as for the keel hanging up, The head of the keel was hanging up on the top of the trunk. so a small portion of the head of the keel was ground off to allow the head to travel the last 3 inches to the fully extended position. 3 inches on top translates to about 1 1/2 feet on the bottom. I'm not sure why it was having a problem, it could be that, being a 77 there were thicker layups of glass than on later models. I don't have the history on this boat but I speculate that if the keel were changed that a newer casting my not have been compatible with the older trunk. Since the boat appeared to be a marina queen (very little sail wear) it is possible that the PO never even noticed the poor performance to windward.
