Promised was a report following the mod to change the wheel steering cable to an open wire system.

First, the system has no play. Second, the change in steering ratio from one turn of the wheel from rudder lock to rudder lock to 2 1/2 turns offers smooth, effortless, precise helming. Third, there is no drag associated with the bending of a sheathed cable. Fourth, the system offers piece of mind. If a cable or sheave fails… repairs can be made easily and quickly and not consign a 2-3 week cruise to using the short emergency tiller with no autopilot.

Sounds very nice.

As I was on my stomach doing my battery project (with the boat in the water), the water would move the rudder back and forth, and I could see and hear the slop where my rudder attaches to the enclosed cable. It looks like I can adjust some of it out, but the open wire system sounds like the way to go.
